This is the first time I've ever seen someone work out the true contact patch by eliminating the voids left in the ink print due to the grooves between blocks. He calculates the actual rubber touching the surface area, not just the area that assumes the voids are magically touching as well.
He also includes a brief discussion of how shape of contact patch matters for various uses. I thought it was worth the watch.
