Need some help. Bought a ram 2500 from a family friend (the original owner) 8 months ago after her husband passed.

Around 2 months ago, got the Red Lightning Bolt (Service Electronic Throttle Control). When a diagnostic was ran, P2181 – Cooling System Performance came up. Mechanic replaced the Thermostat. CEC light came back on within a day. Same Code. Took back in, mechanic said there was air bubbles in radiator line, he flushed the air bubbles. 1 week later, CEC light came back on. Codes read P3449 – Cylinder 7 Deactivation Control Circuit, and P3441 – Cylinder 6 Deactivation Control Circuit. Took to mechanic, he put a wiring harness on order, but told me I was good to drive it around in the meantime. Since then (wiring harness not installed yet), codes P04D1 – EGR, P0128 – Low Coolant Temp, P040B – EGR Temp, and P219A – Bank 1 Air/Fuel Ratio Imbalance have came up.

Any thoughts? Through personal research, I have read that voltage/short issues can cause a couple of the codes. Does this sound plausible? Has anyone had an experience with anything similar?

Update: Reflashed/Reprogrammed the PCM. Now codes read:

P2181 – Cooling System Performance
P3441 – Cylinder 6 Deactivation Control Circuit
P2311 – Ignition Coil 4 Secondary Circuit - Insufficient Ionziation

Bad PCM? Short/Ground issue? We are lost - Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

X2 on have battery load tested, one better how old is the battery? you're this deep into it, I would have thought replacing the battery should have been your first option, I would replace your Parts cannon mechanic.

Update:

I took the above advice and went to a new mechanic.

2nd mechanic I took it to had the truck for 7 weeks (March to late April). He checked the battery voltage, and said that it was fine. He replaced the fuse relay box, MDS Solenoids, T Stat, oil filter & sensor. At the time I picked the truck up, Check engine light still on, with codes:

P3441 – Cylinder 6 Deactivation Control Circuit
P0304 – Cyl 4 Misfire

3rd Mechanic I took it to was the local Ram dealership. Local dealership had it for approximately 6 weeks (early May to mid/late June). Multiple diagnostic fee's later, they diagnosed the issue as a bad PCM and short at the PCM coupler, and replaced both the PCM and coupler. Picked up the truck with no check engine light (first time I had the truck without a check engine light in over 6 months, so I was ecstatic.

After driving it for 6 weeks, the check engine light is back on.

P0308 – Cyl 8 Misfire

Any thoughts/experience with anything of the sort would be greatly appreciated!

So, with all of the above mentioned codes, does it actually misfire? How does it run?

@Ken226 - It seemed to run fine after picking it up from the dealership. A quick synopsis of how the vehicle ran through my troubles.

After picking it up from the 1st mechanic (after he re-flashed the PCM) the vehicle randomly started idling rough the following morning at cold start, and misfiring. Had it towed to the 2nd mechanic out of caution.

After picking it up from the 2nd mechanic, it was no longer idling rough. I did notice a new symptom never previously experienced though: The truck felt like it was getting stuck in a valley (sluggish/felt like bogging down, and can feel a vibration) at lower RPMs (cruising), but would get out of it if I gave it a tad more throttle (not stepping on it, but just a little more). I contributed this to the new MDS he installed, as it would not do this if I put it into tow/haul mode. Check engine light was still on, and throwing codes:
P3441 – Cylinder 6 Deactivation Control Circuit
P0304 – Cyl 4 Misfire
But was no longer idling rough.

After picking it up from the 3rd mechanic (local dealership), there were no check engine light codes, but the sluggishness (mentioned above) was still there. It's only slight, and ceases to do it if you give it a LITTLE more throttle (100 more rpms), and always occurs at the same RPM range. I chalked this up as to normal, as I have never driven a truck with an MDS system before.

The dealership ONLY replaced the PCM and Coupler. The previous misfire & code for Cyl 4. was no longer, and it seemed to drive fine (other than what I chalked up to MDS sensation above).

Now, there is this Cyl 8. misfire code. Truck seems to run fine, but I am not driving it out of caution.

Update:
Dealership was two weeks out - It is scheduled to go in this Thursday (8/15). In the interim, I had the battery load and the alternator tested again. Both are functioning properly. I will update with anything I find out following the dealership.

It might be worth checking the TIPM for corrosion. Since they've already replaced alot of electrical components and not fixed the issue, I would start looking at mechanical issues as well.

I think they should start with the common issues related to these symptoms. Test the compression, pull the valve covers and look at the valve springs, check valve/lifter range of motion.

It's pretty well known that these engines suffer cam failures and broken valve springs. The symptoms you are experiencing are the type that manifest when a cam fails and/or valve spring breaks. Also, pointing further in that direction, is the fact they they parts cannon'ed your engine computer with no resolution.

did you end up getting it all resolved? I own a 2014 6.4 2500 trandesman as well and ironically at 173,*** as well and am having quite the same issue.

- started with p3441 then p3449, went ahead and replaced MDS solenoids and egr cooler hose’s while also replacing the radiator due to a leak.

- all reassembled and still have a persistent p3441 for #6 deactivation, should have tested the ground at all connections while i had the intake off but i didn’t.

- Continued to drive and pull our 10k lb fifthwheel a total of 600miles and it did fine, never missed a beat. morning after fired it up to move the camper it was idling rough and had a total of 12 codes. Mostly all MDS related. Cleared said codes and has ran fine the small amount i’ve driven it but still a persistent p3441.

Thanks for reading and hope to hear back!
