Me and the family were thinking about renting a camper trailer for a long weekend I believe it said it was rated at 5000 pounds can I comfortably tow this without adding any sway bars for other stiffeners? The truck is equipped with the 3.21 axle ratio, class IV receiver hitch and Brake Controller switch

Depends what the tongue weight of the trailer is. You might get some sag in the rear if it's too heavy

You probably get away with it sense the owners manual states 6k is the limit at needing WDH but depending on how far you tow you may want to consider it not for weight but stability with the fact campers are pretty much a sail they are big light and solid sidewalls. If your going 20 miles to the local lake no biggie just be smart going 500 miles cross country I would look into seeing if you can rent a WDH.

Okay thanks for the information I'll probably be driving it no more than a hundred fifty miles each way

X2 Jerry's post. Won't be the best but it'll be better than nothing. 25' (guessing) is a good size sail for a newcomer. May want to rent a box trailer or 2 over the summer and donate yer time pulling 'em around to a local charity. Furniture pickups are the best.Practice with a purpose and whatnot.

Is the trailer 5,000# empty or loaded? Doesn't take much to get up to 6,000# + with water, food and other supplies.

You should be ok for such a short trip as long as you load things correctly (balance) and don't drive like a crazy person.

Our truck is similar. We are towing a trailer on a weekly basis that weighs 6744lbs dry. It toes extremely well. I would use some sort of weight distribution hitch.

12% of 5000# is 600# tongue weight. And that 5000# trailer weight is dry weight. Add the battery, propane, gear and you are closer to, if not more than, 6000# of trailer weight. Now you are up to 720# of tongue weight. You should be fine on payload, but I'd seriously look at a WDH. Unless you like white knuckles and putting your family at risk.

It's usually smooth sailing, until that 18 wheeler passes you doing 70+ MPH. A WDH with sway control makes life easier. Especially if you aren't accustomed to towing a long, heavy sail.
