The speaker in my driver side door got kicked and detached from the door, leaving an oval hole straight into the inside of the door. There is another small round hole on the bottom of the door that leads directly outside, I'm guessing it's a drain hole? Anyway, this made me realize that water has been getting inside my door all this time when I hit puddles etc. Is there some sort of material that I should line the inside of the door with? To help keep water, dirt , even sound from getting inside the door? I'm worried it will begin rusting from the inside out

they are drain holes . very little water comes in much water drains out, the result of rain, dew, condensation, washing your car, etc. They are important, ventilation is key. There is a factory plastic membrane to limit the moisture intrusion into the interior. Holding moisture in is a much worse situation. That's why it is important to keep the drains in the doors, cowl, and rockers clear of debris.

Thanks for the reply.... I won't tamper with the drain hole. However I am considering removing the door this spring and cleaning it out, there's lots of dirt visible on the inside thru the speaker hole. Could I add some sound dampening material on the inside or would that not make much of a difference?

I am sure some audiophiles on this site could contribute some advice on that. I see no reason why that wouldn't help the overall sound, as long as it's an inert material.

I have another question. There is perfectly good rubber along the cab, but there is no rubber on the door itself. Should there be? Would rubber on rubber contact be the best way to get the water to stop leaking in my door when it rains? It comes from the top area of the door. If someone could show me a picture of how a first gen door is supposed to look? All the rubber and weather stripping and stuff

There's nothing on the door itself, just the piece of foam like weather stripping attached to the cab. If you need to replace it I'm pretty sure 1A Auto has it, that's where I got the vent window seals for my '85.
