My OEM TransForce tires are finally in need of replacing, and I am looking at getting some bigger shoes under the truck. My plans are to either level the truck and put some 35x12.5 tires on, or to install a 5.5" lift and go with 37x12.5. I was hoping to not have to replace the stock Longhorn Laramie (20x8) wheels. Has anyone mounted a 12.5" wide tire on them? I used to run 12.5's on a 16x8 wheel on my old truck, but while looking at tires, see that minimum recommended wheel width is 8.5" for 20" wheels. If it is doable with the stockers, will I have any issues with rubbing in either set up?

I mounted Cooper STMaxx 35 x 12.5's on my stock 20" (non-Longhorn) wheel and nothing rubs at all. I do have a 1.5" spacer up front though.

It's not a rubbing issue so much as a tire bead issue. The tire may be too wide for an 8" wheel.

A spacer will help any inside rubbing issues.

Mines a 1500, but I run 35x12.50s on my oem 20x8s with no issue. You won't have any problems.

Yeah, my first concern was the tire not holding a bead, but didn't know if the backspacing/offset on the stock wheels would cause me issues as well in either scenario. I appreciate the responses, trying to get this all figured out so I can start ordering everything.

You put a 2500 rated load in the bed and watch what happens to the bead.

Tell that to everyone running wide tires on oem wheels that use their trucks for work everyday. Thousands have done it for thousands of miles.

I wouldn't do it. I'm running some 12.50's on 8" stock rims(84' cj7). I have to air the tires down to 22 psi to keep from wearing out the centers which will prematurely wear out the sidewalls. Pick your poison I guess....

Appreciate all of the input. Guess I've got some thinking to do. I never had a problem with running 12.5's on the stock 8" wheels on my old truck...but it was a 1/2 ton Ram, and had 16" wheels. The biggest confusion for me is, looking at Toyo's recommendations, they are fine with 12.5's on 16x8, but not 20x8.

Have you looked at metric sized tires to get the height but a bit narrower?

Seems like there are many shops that won't even mount them for you if they are not the recommended tire. Trying to cover their but I guess.

I have, not sure I want anything narrower than a 12.5. Probably going to bite the bullet on a set of wheels. I don't want the tires sticking out passed the fenders any more than necessary. What range of backspacing/offset should I be looking at?

You need a high offset wheel and good luck as there really aren't many options. My Centerline specs are as follows:

20x8.5 wheel, 6.0" backspacing, +32mm offset.

They just fit inside the wheel wells/flares. If anything I'd like them tucked in another 1/2" or so but it works.

I run 305/70/18 on Laramie wheels. Tires are rated for 8.5 rim, 1/2" smaller won't do squat but hold the bead better

You're saying an 8" wheel is going to have LESS of a chance of popping a bead?

That looks excellent. Doesn't have to be totally behind the fender flares, but don't want them sticking way out either.

Yes wider than spec wheels, the bead has to be pushed out to the rim. Skinnier wheels hold the bead better because the tire is being pulled into the bead. Off roaders have been using skinnier wheels for years so they can air way down and not pop the bead. We're also not talking inches here, but a 1/4" per side. Toyo even has a 315/70/18 rated for 8" rims, they say it's 13" wide

Are there any issues running 17" wheels on the 3/4 tons? Considering going with some Method Standards in 17x8.5 +25 offset.

EDIT: Should have looked around a bit more before asking. I see at least one example of someone running 17's.
