New to buying a truck, I have been looking for about a year, mostly for a 2500hd gm gas but havnt had much luck. Not familiar with the dodge trucks at all but ran across a 2012 2500 with the 5.7 hemi. It has the Laramie package with cold weather package as well so leather heated/cooled front seats, rear heated seats, heated steering wheel etc. About 80,000 miles and has a good service record. Asking 27000, which seems decent from what I see but like I said not familiar with dodge vehicles at all. Is this a decent deal? Truck has never been worked, more of a city/garage truck.

I paid 32k for my 15' 2500 SLT with the 5.7 Hemi and 4.10 gears. Had 18k miles on it when I got it. Weather she's pulling +10,000lbs, playing off-road, or just looking good, does great! No regrets at all!

Nice looking truck! And that also sounds like a pretty sweet deal. Paying more attention to then in person now, I really do like the look of the gen4 trucks. It also sat surprisingly higher than I thought they did. Coming from driving a car mostly it felt like I was sitting on top of the rest of the traffic. Even compared to my Yukon it felt huge inside.

For that vehicle I would definitely buy it, but I would offer $25,000 and see what comes of it. As far as the Gm Hd search, have you tried doing a no limit search . My buddy found his Mercedes that way over 500 miles from him. Even with the flight and the drive back it was still $5000.00 cheaper. :)

WOW shocked the hell out of me.. I personally would never think about paying 28k for a 5 year old truck with 80k miles but NADA says "retail" is 29k wow..

I know that was my initial reaction as well, and why I was looking for feedback. It seemed high until I started looking at NADA, KBB etc. then it actually started looking like a decent deal. It just confused me more. I think a lot of it is the package. The Laramie seems to add quite a bit to the "value" and therefore the price. It also adds some pretty nice amenities to the truck from what I could tell.

Forgot to mention this truck also has a Line-x bed liner, aftermarket wheels, a bed topper, and chrome running boards/nerf bar things LOL. Oh and a AIRAID intake/filter system.

OP what is your budget cause if you have a higher budget you might be able to look at a newer Ram but instead of the 5.7 hemi you can look at the bigger 6.4 hemi with 4.10 gears :naughty:

I was looking for a 6.4 when I was looking for a 2500 Hemi. Couldn't find one in my budget that I could make a good deal with my trade in. Got a killer deal on my 5.7 HD though, no regrets. [emoji16] The 6.4 with 4.10s is nasty [emoji41] you can feel the extra 25hp/tq over the 5.7 Hemi. 6.4 with 3.73s feels similar to my 5.7 and 4.10s. She's no slouch with the 5.7 though, she'll move a 10,000+ trailer just fine [emoji6]

Unfortunately that’s the used truck market. They are getting more and more expensive new now and holding their resale value. Take a look at used Cummins trucks if you want your jaw to drop. The old pre-DEF Cummins trucks are insane now too. The good thing is Ram helps by having a lot of incentives and discounts on the new trucks. You could consider looking into new and getting a lower trim/less optioned truck. You can get a Tradesman for around 30 and a Big Horn for around 36 like Ratket said. If new is out of your price range at the moment or you really want more features then I don’t think $27 is too out of line for that 2012. I would try to get them to knock off 2-3k though. Id be much more comfortable getting that truck for even $25. If you aren’t in a rush then like others have said, just take your time and wait for the right truck. But you are making a good choice looking into the 4th gen Ram HDs. Great rigs. And yes they make a Yukon feel and look small lol.

If you get the 6.4 then 4.10s is the only way to go IMO. It helps that motor work in its power band and should just be the standard gear with it. It also helps the trans hold gears and maintain or gain speed uphill without having to give more gas or force the truck to downshift. The Pedal Commander helps the truck feel like its geared even lower. 6.4 and maybe 4.56 with Pedal Commander would be such a freaking blast to drive lol.

Thanks for the info everyone, I am in no hurry, like I said been looking at trucks for over a year now, just not the Ram's until recently. 24-25 would certainly make me feel better about it, I will talk with the guy and see if he will move on price. If not I will probably hold out. I also may look at new, like mentioned the used market is just insane it seems, and with incentives etc, your almost better off spending a little more and getting something new with warranty etc. I think.

In my area at least, 2005-2010 GM 2500HD's that have pretty heavy rust on the rockers seem to go for 10,000+. It's crazy, and the reason I started looking at newer stuff, and non-GM stuff as I have even seen 2010+ trucks with nearly rusted through rockers. That is insane to me. The RAM's seem to be better on the rust problems.

All the reading I have been doing I think it very likely has some busted exhaust header bolts. When the guy started it up cold, it had almost a hissing kind of sound, sort of high pitched, almost like an exhaust leak maybe? It wasn't there once it was warmed up.

Dude, take a look on craigslist, atleast in my area (philadelphia) there are a$$hole people selling 2004 2005,2006 Ram Turbo Diesals with 150k-200k for $25 k-$30k. It's insane. Everyone wants $25k for their 2006 Ram Diesel with over 150k miles. It's ridiculous to pay $20k+ for a 10+ year old vehicle but these "bros" have jacked up the price of used diesels in my area and all the bros need to have them lifted with big wide wheels and smoke stacks and think their 12yr old truck is worth $25k. It's a joke.

Like $30k.... seriously? WTF is even going on? Am I living in an alternate reality where diesel owners smoke crack?

It makes me sick how insane prices are on turbo diesels. It's not like their some special insane new age technology and gas engines are ****. People treat diesel trucks like their gold bars rolling on wheels. I don't understand this fad. It's insane. For $5k-$10k more (on some of these) you can have a brand new 2500 HD 6.4l hemi. Or a fully loaded 1500 5.7 hemi.

As mentioned, I'd spend the extra 5-10k and buy new if i were you. Shop around. The prices of used trucks are redicolous. Spend the extra money, buy new. Then you'll have a full warranty and no guesswork on the history of the truck. In my area, $20k gets you a 10+ yr old half ton truck with 100k+ miles. No thank you.

If you buy at rhe the end of the year when dealers are trying to hit sales goals, the discounts and rebates can be great. Good luck

People think they can charge whatever they want for the pre emissions Cummins now.

I would agree to try and go new. Nothing compares to having a brand new vehicle with a clean history and full factory warranty. You know the vehicle hasnt been abused. You cant prove a used vehicle hasnt, no matter what the owner or carfax says. Sometimes its much better to have a vehicle that hasnt been modified either. Never know how people might have half assed a mod.

Those are some insane prices, and sadly it is exactly the same way in my area. That is the biggest reason I have been looking for almost 2 years, and still don't own one yet. I am definitely going to look at new as I found out I get special "supplier" pricing on RAM trucks through my work as the company I work for supplies parts to the auto industry so they get special discounts. It's hard to know the exact numbers until you really get into the process but it looks like somewhere between $4000 and $6000 off, plus whatever other incentives they have going at the time. And it also applies to new old stock, so a guy may be able to get a pretty good deal when the new model year stuff comes out. Worth looking into I guess.

And I do like the Laramie package, although I always have the nagging feeling it's just more crap to eventually quit working and need replacing LOL.
