How much Blu Def do you use?

Just wondering what the "norm" might be. Besides my Ram, I own a VW Touareg TDI. It has the Blu Def system. It sips the juice. The Ram...at least for this trip, not so much.

I just returned from a 5200 mile trip. Towed a 35 ft. 10,000 lb trailer. Lots of mountains & wind. Started the trip with a full tank of Blu Def. Added a jug today, which brought me back to full. That made a total of 4 jugs ( 10 gallons ) of Blu Def added for this trip. Maybe that's normal, but seems a bit excessive to me.

Thanks,

It all depends on your emissions coming out of the tail pipe. Obviously if you're towing a 10,000lb trailer you're going to be going through more DEF, because the emissions will be higher during heavy load. You'll be using a lot more diesel too. If you're just cruising down the highway with no trailer you will barely use any. If you towed your trailer with the Touareg it would be guzzling the DEF just as much.

During normal/easy driving you could go as far as 10,000mi before needing to add more.

About 2% in relation the amount of fuel burned is the amount of DEF used.
Using roughly 10mpg for towing 10K lbs over 5200 miles, going through 10 gallons of DEF is about in the ballpark.

In my experience, the harder the truck works, the faster the DEF fluid burns. I pull my 13K pound trailer 680 miles from Florida to Alabama leaving with the DEF tank full. I am more than 2/3 the way back before I fill it up again but I don't usually go below 1/4 tank so it would probably take me round trip on one tank. When I get to 1/4 tank (DEF tank), a 2.5 gal DEF will fill the tank. If I'm not towing I can go months without filling the DEF tank. Florida to Alabama doesn't have many hills though...
