How much better is a 2500 for towing?

Something doesn't look right, for sure. My 2500 isn't 9,580 lbs. My 3500 dually wasn't quite that heavy either.

My 22 2500 with the add on stuff is around 7900 empty

My current truck
2018 Ram 2500 MegaCab Laramie, 4wd, 68RFE trans

came in at 7,876 when we weighed it in December. That included my wife and I, full DEF and fuel, all my tools behind the rear seat and the running boards. I probably added 20-25 lbs with the bedcover since then.


My previous truck:
2016 Ram 3500 Crew Cab Dually Laramie, 4wd, 68RFE trans

Came in at 8,923 lbs. That included my wife and I, full tanks, an in bed tool box with tools, and running boards. With the B&W Companion hitch (287 lbs) before I swapped to a Goosebox it weighed 9,210 lbs.

I can't imagine a 1500 in any trim weighing 9,580 lbs under any circumstance. Heck I can't really imagine any 2500 weighing 9,580 lbs.

I had a 2500 with 5.7. It pulled the 27’ travel trailer fine. Went to AK with it, a 6500 mile round trip. No problem. Traded it for a 1500 with 5.7 and all towing options and went back to AK. It was fine until I got to South Dakota. Cross winds and big trucks were a nightmare. Traded for a 2500 with 6.4 in Idaho and finished the trip. The difference was amazing. No more little trucks for me.

Are you using a WDH even with the 2500? I recently upgraded from a F150 to a Ram 2500 with 6.7, I don’t suspect I technically need the weight distribution aspect but possibly the sway control.

You may still need a WDH hitch. It depends on the trailer. The payload on a 2500 is fairly low so you could still see some squat.

I use a WDH for pretty much any travel trailer of decent size if I'm going on a trip. Might not need it, even with my 2500 or my past F350s, but it's better to have it even if it isn't transferring much weight. It still puts weight back on the trailer and steer axle, even if not much was taken off, and makes for a nicer pull.

I see far too many people pulling Travel Trailers without a WDH because 'It's a 3/4 ton, I don't need it' even though the truck and trailer are so loaded you can visibly SEE that there's very little weight on the steer tires. Don't be one of those people.

I also use a wdh for most of what I tow. With your diesel 2500 your towing capability is lower than a gasser but still significant enough that the proper set up is very important. About the only thing I tow without one is when I have a dump trailer with 6k pounds of rock or dirt, mostly because it isn't an option and because I drive back roads slow between materials yard and my house, which is only a few miles.

Same deal here - when it comes to RVs or bigger/heavier trailers that I can't adjust the load on, I use a WDH. For my flatbed or other small trailers, there's not really a need - I can get the weight close enough to right or I'm not going very far with it to not need one.
