After reading here, and other places, I've come to the conclusion that the cabin filter mod would be a good idea to add to my new 2016 Crew Cab. I checked here, a couple other forums and youtube and how to do the cabin air filter mod and was thinking about ordering one of the cabin filter mod kits but figured I'd go out and look at where everything is on the truck and how hard, or easy, it would be to be to do this. So, I pulled the glove box (super easy) to take a look and low and behold there's the door for the filter already there. So I pull the filter door off and no filter. Strange they'd make the air box for the filter and even have the filter door there yet no filter. Anyway went over to the local auto parts and picked up a filter for about $12.50, came home and popped it in, snapped the filter door back in place and put the glove box back on. Piece O cake!

On a note for any that are considering doing this "mod" after a little more study on this subject it appears that the later 2016s have the filter door already installed, just no air filter inside. So if you're considering doing this check first before you order the kit, you might get a present surprise.

Yes. Mine was a late 2016 build and also had the factory cutout and door in place. I installed a K&N VF2013 washable filter mostly because it has a significantly higher airflow than the paper or paper/charcoal types. I do think the paper types do a better job at very small dust particles though and they are certainly less expensive.

Mine was built in May '16 and didn't have the door.

I cut out the plastic and used duct tape instead of a door.

What's the point in this mod?

Keeps dirt and dust out of your cab but more important is it keeps it out of your AC condenser coils. AC condenser does just that, condenses water on the outside of it so when the AC is running it is wet. (Which is why you see water dripping on the street/driveway when you park after using the AC). Since its wet it turns the dirt and dust into mud and clogs up your AC condenser. If it's clogged up with mud then your AC doesn't work and you'll have to remove the condenser to clean or replace it (depending on how bad it is). Much easier and cheaper to change a $12 filter every 15k miles or so.

Maybe more important for a 4x4 that's going to be off road some of the time.

Yeah, and if you have seen the videos on how to clean or replace the condensers on our trucks....it's insane. You have to pretty much remove the entire dash to get to it. I'm so glad I added the cabin air filter to my 2014 within the 1st 1,000 miles.

If the door is already there, is it really a mod? [emoji848]

To be fair, probably not but the point was its a common mod (if you don't have the door) and I was just pointing out that some may already have the door so check first before you order the kit. You may not need to.

Anyone have a part number for the 12$ filter ? Can't find mine. Need to to replace it. Don't want one with charcoal since it will block more airflow. Just regular paper one.

My 2016 was built in June and it has the access door. Also, If you are particularly sensitive to pollen and such, Bosch actually makes a HEPA filter that fits. I believe the p/n is 6016C

I would definitely recommend this to anyone especially in dry places. surprisingly it gets very dusty and dirty up here in Alaska and i couldn't imagine how dirty the air would be in my truck without the filter let alone what I'm breathing
