I'm guessing, to make the rear of the seat fold down, vs up.

I started to this mod and when I got the seat down I realized that there's really no room to put anything back there (in the quad cabs) so I quit.

I'm not sure but I don't think the crew cabs have any more room back there than the quad cabs. The seats are just back a little further for more leg room so behind the seat is the same I'm pretty sure. Behind my seat, I have an inverter, tow strap, Viair air pump, an extra 25-foot air hose for the pump and I still have room for a few more things. It's not a lot of room but for kinda small odds and ends, like those mentioned, it beats them rolling around on the floorboards.
