Got in to my first accident on Sunday during the snow we had here in Illinois. Slid off the road and through a barbed wire fence. One of the Posts punctured my oil pan. Long story short, we just bought a house and changed auto insurance... something got mixed up and the insurance company is not going to cover repairs on my claim. So I can't even worry about the body damage. I need to be back in service and hope to do the oil pan swap myself to save a large sum of money but I can't find much info on how to get it done.

Has anyone done this on the new body 4x4's with the 5.7 motor?

Is it worth it to DIY or should I shell out the 600-800 to have a shop do it?

If I try it myself, do I need to lift up the motor can I drop the front axle to gain access?

Any tips, instructions, or part numbers would really be appreciated.

The front diff has to come out in order to remove the oil pan, so that means the axles as well. Some of the bolts are a pain to get, and that's with using a hoist. If you're doing this on jackstands it'll just be more tricky.

All that for a damn pan, has it always been that complicated for most cars?

Really depends on the car, but for 4wd trucks it's usually a fairly involved job.

I had to replace the oil pan gasket on my old Jeep Cherokee. Not a fun job.

Thanks for all of the input guys. Decided it was outside my capability and had a pro with a lift do it. No way I could have cleared enough space under there with hand tools and jacks in my driveway.

Info for anyone facing this in the future...

Quotes from the 2 local dealers were $1600 and $1800 for the job. Local shop wanted $1200 and a family friend quoted me $800. All said and done, he only charged $675 for the oil pan and gasket replacement at 6.5 hours of labor. He said it actually took him closer to 9 hours and was a royal pain to do as a one man job.
