the dealer says 87, which i wouldnt believe based on that. The manual says 89, optimal, 87 okay/

wondering if yall have noticed any difference in performance or fuel economy between the two, what you think generally, etc. on balance its a small extra to pay for mid grade here, roughly 12 cents a gallon. just wondered if necessary...

I went to 89. I did notice some minor hesitation/pinging with 87. So I dumped a bottle of seafoam in the tank and run 89 now and it's better.

Have you heard any pinging in the motor or knock? The higher the oct the less chance of knock.

87 to me felt sluggish probably due to motor pulling timing cause of knocking. I only use 89 or 93 now

I always run premium. Stupid high altitude and lots of long steep hills.

i wonder if the higher octane changes the mpg's..... first 2 tanks of gas on my 09 were 89 octane, and the gauge read "410 miles to empty", then I just filled up with 87, and it ready "372 miles to empty"...... not sure what happened there...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you 'should' have any pinging.

filled up with 89 today but Im going to try 93 next tank. I just bought my truck 10 days ago and finally ran out of whatever the dealer had in it so no comparison for me yet.

I've run 87 twice and did see a decrease in MPG's, performance wasn't much different though. I always put 89 in it now.

I get plenty of pinging running 87...one would think we shouldn't with as much computer control this thing has.
I have only heard the ping under wot and never with 89 only 87. Its even worse when I have the trailer hooked up and trying to merge into traffic....with 87. I run 89 all the time now and don't have an issue with ping.

I have built race cars all my life including turbo charged applications. I know about predetontation.

I got noticeably worse gas mileage with 87. Ran 93 for my first 5 tanks, went to 87 for 2 tanks and gas mileage dropped by almost 2 mpg. Driving habits are the same.

On 93 I averaged 19mpg on the highway, on 87 I'm struggling to keep 17mpg.

In the city Ive averaged 13-13.5 on 93, compared to 12mpg on 87.

This is just my experience in the 2800 miles I've put on my truck since buying it, I will be going back to 93 permanently.
