My 2016 Laramie has 4000 miles on it. Just recently, the transmission slips between 1st and 2nd (might be 2nd and third) gears. It then slips in the same fashion between the next shift but not nearly as bad. If I immediately bring the truck to a stop and try to duplicate the problem, it will only duplicate the first slip. Also, it only duplicates the slip at about 30% intensity of the the first time it does it. After that, it will never slip again unless isn't driven 4 or 5 hours. So it only slips when it's cold and never slips when it's after it goes through the gears two times. Also, if I warm the truck up for 5 minutes, it will still slip but not as bad.

It only started doing this the last 2 or three weeks and it is gradually getting worse. I have no transmission leaks in the driveway. I assume it's going to get worse and I plan on taking it to the dealership soon, but am scheduled to to drive the truck on a 700 mile trip this weekend. Any thoughts on what's going on with the tranny and should I not take it on the trip?

Are you sure it's actually slipping. The 8 speed can be temperamental when it's cold till it actually begins to get to operating temperature. My truck has short shifts and holds the gears a lot longer when it's cold compared to when I've been driving it for 30 mins and it's up to operating temp, the shifts are more gradual and it will be more inclined to shift higher compared to when it's cold.

This happens to mine every morning from first to second. 1 Time and then it's gone. It's a temperature thing I believe.

Oh yea, it's slipping. With moderate acceleration, it revs close to 4000 rpms (when it slips). Definitely slipping. And like I say, it started about 2-3 weeks ago. Never did this the first 3500 miles.

Same here I describe it worse than slipping basically complete loss of power during the first 1st to 2nd shift. I will be leaned forward in my seat and the power loss will cause me to hit my head on the roof. It only happens to me at really low throttle the amount you give it if you are trying to be nice to a cold transmission and I only have to drive 100ft to the first stop sign. It is uphill so that may be why I feel the power loss so bad. It is like they have to disengage first to apply second and that takes probably a second to do instead of the claimed 200ms. I typically warm my truck up on these cold mornings. If I can't I always wait a minute or two for the initial fast idle to calm down.

Do you back out of a driveway/parking spot before driving forward when this happens?

Mine isn't a loss of power. It's as if I was driving a standard during moderate acceleration and without letting up on the accelerator, I quickly pushed the clutch 75 - 80% of the way to the floor and immediately released it. As stated in previous post, when it slips, the rpms rev up to 4,000.

I back into my driveway so when I start in the morning, the first direction the truck drives is forward.

No I park reverse so I just go forward in the morning. But it still happens if I go reverse and then forward while cold.

I've read about several people that have a similar "weird" first shift from 1st to 2nd, the common thing was backing up before driving. Mine would do it also when cold, but wrote it off being lite on the throttle(not far to the stop sign).
Pausing in neutral before shifting to drive seems to keep it from happening.

I am almost sure it has nothing to do with transmission problems and more to do with the tuning of the transmission. Nothing to worry about I would say. Yea light throttle is how I keep it from happening too.

have the dealer check fluid level before your trip.

Yeah if I'm understanding you correctly, your jumping RPMs, say light throttle 2k in 1st gear and all of a sudden your at 4k and then it shifts to 2nd and your back down to 2k rpms? If that's the case I would get it looked at before your trip. As explained my truck can be alittle hesitant when it's cold but mine will shift fine from 1st to 2nd but usually will hold the gears longer, tends to feel like your slightly holding the brake while accelerating for lack of a better way to describe it. It will also tend to limit itself to 4th or 5th gear till it begins to warm up and once it reaches operating temperature it's smooth as butter.

Yes, exactly. Much better description than my explanation.

Have any of you niticed when coming to a stop think 4 way turning right no oncoming traffic. Give truck throttle then it shifts to first its almost like it was in neutral then it engaged first as soon as i stepped on gas. Its really weird its like truck is in neutral then grabs when it reaches say 1 to 1200 rpm. Is this normal. 16 cc 5.7 8spd. Not trying to hijack thread. It s almost like it downshifts 2 to 1 then neutral till you give it throttle just feels weird

^ This, or do it yourself. Just reading a thread yesterday where 2 different guys had transmission leaks on pretty new trucks and low fluid can cause what you are experiencing.

Hi malatu,

Sorry to hear about this! If you decide to visit your local dealership I'd be happy to follow up with them for you if needed. Just PM our page with your VIN and let me know.

It's my understanding that the transmission is a sealed unit and as a result, there isn't a dip-stick to check level of fluid in the tranny.

I guess a wise man would open up his owner's manual! :happy107:

Mine does exact same thing. I try to leave slowly so the exhaust doesnt annoy the neighbours and that when it does it. If i leave hard on the gas i wont do it. Only does it when truck been parked for several hours. Warming up the truck has no effect on it.
