About a month ago I had to have my valve stem seals replaced on my '16 Ram. I was blowing smoke upon start up. Fast forward one month later, started the truck this morning only to see smoke coming from the tailpipe again. The truck only has 16k on it. Has anyone had this issue? Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. New to the forum. Thanks.

Hi Kro75--I haven't helped anyone with this particular concern, but would be happy to reach out to your dealership on your behalf and look into this further. If you're interested, please send a PM with your VIN.

Are you sure it isn't just the normal white vapor that happens at start up during certain weather conditions?

ExpressRules yes I'm sure. I do get the normal exhaust vapor after the fact. This is a bluish smoke that lingers for a bit. Definitely oil but I do appreciate the suggestion. I have a friend who is a tech for a GM dealer. He asked me if they replaced the stems or just the seals the first time. I checked the r/o and it was just the seals. Apparently if the valve stem has play in it that could be why.

Thanks Kori, I appreciate that. I have a service appointment on the 8th so I'll wait and see what they say. I purchased this truck certified pre owned. Love the truck but I hope they can fix this issue.

I would be relentless at fixing this through the dealer, this is a defect for sure. Check your local lemon laws and keep your receipts. Hopefully they fix it, but if not know your rights and responsibilities. I would be very troubled if they fixed it and it came back again. very unusual.

He already said, 2016 with 16k.

So in CA lemon law is first 18 months and 18,000 miles. So I'm saying check your local laws, you might already be out of relief.

What year Ram, motor and how many miles?

2016 Big horn. 5.7 only 16k. I haven't even owned it for six months yet. Bought It certified pre owned. I've owned an 04 and an 07 with no issues. At least I got a 7 year 100k warranty on the powertrain. Was just hoping I wouldn't have to use it. Wishfull thinking I guess. Just frustrating because the last time I had there, they had it for three weeks (due to being short staffed around the holiday they claim). I had to drive a Compass as a loaner. If I wanted a Compass, I would've bought one.

Thanks for the tip. I did look into that. I'm in N.Y. The law is a bit confusing. I believe the dealer gets four attempts to fix the issue first. I guess I would need to check and see when the vehicle was first sold to see if I fall in that 18 month period. Since it is a '16, I think it would. Not really sure how the certified pre owns work.

Will do Burla. I appreciate the advice. I keep everything in a folder. Also have video proof of the issue. Hopefully the third times the charm.

CA same thing 4 attempts, that is why I'm saying bring that back to the dealer asap. I won a lemon case, I got 13 grand plus was able to keep the truck. If you qualify it is literally an automatic win, they settle before court. GL

here's your law

You are in good shape, make sure it is fixed with 2k miles though. Hopefully it wont come to this, but if it does hire a lemon law attorney ASAP. If the problem persists, try not to drive the truck, you don't want to go over 18k, and you have up to 24 months, longer then CA.

And as long as you have receipts, you have up to 4 years to bring your case.

Hey thanks Burla. The question I have is would it matter if I go over the 18k since the original problem started at 15k? I was thinking that it would be documented from the first issue and since that was under the 18k, I would Be ok if I went over. I'm not sure I'll be able to stay under 18 since it seems like I have to drive it in order for the problem to reoccur.
