So, the shop that has been working on my truck called me today. They can't get the actual gear to fit into the rear diff. Granted, I'm not there to look at it...but are they missing something? Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Doesn't the rear end differential box have to be grinded down to make these gears fit?

I'm pretty sure I've always heard that it has to be grinded down to fit.

Agreed. lol not too keen on the idea of having to grind something down to make it fit. Matt...I have a pm out to Duane to double check.

4.88s need ground down but anything lower doesn't.... however I have heard that on 06 and up they may require a little grinding depending on what gear set you go with. Did you get the right gears and master install kit?

Starting late 05 the rear-ends are built by American Axle Manufactors NOT Chrysler and are smaller towards the passenger side of the housing which is where the 4:56's rub because they are a thicker gear.. The gears have to be installed and set, turned by hand to mark the housing then disassembled and the housing is ground where the marks are for clearance..

This pic is from another site but it give you an idea, not much has to be shaved or ground off. Believe it or not that isn't the only thing that needs to be ground, the cross pin needs grinding as well to get it past the thick 4.56 ring gear.

This is for the Dodge Ram 1500 '02-07 ('06/07 models may need machining to make these gears fit for the rear axle).

that was posted on moe's site for motives 4.56 master kit

I've never seen it personally but I've heard the same thing about grinding the case. I can't see it being any different than clearancing a 350 Chevy block for a 400 crank.

Again, very common to grind here and there. Doesn't seem right but then again Dodge wasn't planning on putting 4.56's in there 1500's

And the pin need grinding to slip past the thicker 4.56 ring. Pictured is prob a 3.92. The thicker 4.56 ring surpasses the hole where the cross pin need to slide in therefore grinding the pin is common with the trac lok LSD. Not sure about open diff or DTT.
