I'm curious what a fully functioning good strong running 2003 4.7L engine is worth with approximately 100k miles. I see that most people wait until an engine blows up to replace it and basically get nothing for it. What if I wanted to upgrade to a newer 4.7 or even the Hemi but I wanted to offset the cost by selling my current engine while its still running well. What do you think they are worth?

Not sure but will the new 4.7 bolt straight up to a 02?

retail price from Barely Used Auto Parts for a 2003 4.7 in "A" condition is $2500...according to their site, "A" condition means it is equal or less to 60K miles. However, I would search Craigslist and see if theyre are any in your area, that would be a more realistic price example to go with. I would say less than $1000 for sure.

Theyre are shops here selling them rebuilt for $2500 installed with a 3 yr/50K mile warranty.

Yeah I figured it would be less then $1000 but if its anywhere close that's a big portion of a new engine rebuild. I'm not sure if a new 4.7 would bolt up to an 02 or not but seems like it would be the same or less collocated than the guys who are upgrading to hemi's. I could be wrong though. I figured a new wire harness CPU would be needed just like a hemi swap. I thought about the new 4.7 since they had a decent HP gain in recent years and would be less expensive than a hemi.

Yeah I think if you can spend 1500-2000 for a newer 4.7 with approximately 310hp that would be money well spent. I'm not sure if i could get that kind of HP out of add on parts for that money with my current 4.7?

I would say about $750-900, that's about the going price in my area, while the trans goes for $1200 lol. Also, imo, if you're gonna do a swap, do a 5.7 or 6.1. Yea it will cost a bit more, but you will also be ALOT happier with the end result.

Really, I thought the 09 had 310hp well even 290 is better than what I have now. A 5.7 would be great, I'm wondering though if i could keep my current trans with an 08 4.7 or would I need a new one? If i needed a new trans then I might as well do a hemi.

Found this online: The 2009 Dodge Ram

is also available with a 4.7-liter V8 that outputs 310 hp (231 kW) and 330 lb.-ft. (447 Nm) of torque and a 3.7-liter V6 engine developing 215 hp (160 kW) and 235 lb.-ft. (319 Nm) of torque. Dodge Press Release:

I also saw on allpar where they list power 290-310 so either probably correct.

Yeah, they must have done some more digging into the engine to pick up another 20HP...According to Allpar, they say that someone calles oh20 rated the Ram 08 4.7 at 310, for the Dakota 302...weird.

03 and newer tone ring will not work with 02 computer. Also the 08+ engine is fly-by-wire, you'd have to adapt an older TB. Older computer management isn't designed to work with the 08+ heads with their twin plug ignition. Definitely not a drop in.

I wouldn't waste money on putting in a newer 4.7. Since you have a 2002, you'd definitely have to change the harnesses and PCM for any 4.7 2003+. You would also run into more wiring issues with the rest of the truck if you use an engine & PCM that is 2006+.

If you are patient and look on multiple craigslists, you can find a killer deal on a hemi engine and associated parts. The swap is very doable and you'll have a lot more power.

I don't think you would have a problem getting $1300 or so out of your 4.7. Every other week I see posts on all the forums about a 2002 4.7 overheating and blowing up. A lot of guys just want a cheap replacement and don't intend to upgrade.

I put a hemi in my 2002 and haven't regretted it :)

In February I broke a valve spring on my 5.7 which dropped the valve and put a hole in my piston. I bought an 04 5.7 with 60,000 miles out of a wrecked truck for $1800, knowing that, I'm not sure what a comparable 4.7 would be. But I would imagine you would have to find someone with a blown engine who needed it.

So just for argument sake lets say I got $1200 for my engine and could find a similar deal on a as you did on a hemi for $1800, so at this point I'm looking at $600 out of pocket just to buy the engine. What do you think I'm looking at for the rest if the things I'd need like computer and harness and install? I know it varies but ballpark it for me.

Figure around another $600-$900 ballpark. Best thing would be to find a donor motor along with all the acc. and wiring harnes.

Donor truck would be awesome if you can find one reasonably priced. Otherwise, you can check that link I sent you. You'll need accessories (although I think the pwr steering pump is the same), radiator hoses, heater hoses, 2 AC hoses, exhaust work, APPS throttle box & cable or electronic pedal, PCM, engine wiring harness, oxygen sensors. If you want to be CEL free and/or have emissions testing where you are, you'll need an NGC Evap Purge solenoid (and wiring & connector), NVLP pump and various little hoses.
