I've thought the Pioneer TS-D were a good value for a long time. If you have a hard $500 budget, even entry level kicker etc... will be better than stock. Match the pieces. No sense in $300 focal components and matching coax if just gonna run it off a noisey and woefully underpowered head unit. The entire system is only as good as its worst part.

Well if you want high end sound, yes, of course you will need to spend more. You cant expect to purchase entrey level and expect high end sound. The CS lineup is one of the biggest sellers. Awesome for small upgrade from factory.
