Hi,

My A/C is acting up and every time I get it checked out it's cooling fine so the techs can't really identify anything wrong with it.
I could be driving for 5 minutes or half an hour and out of nowhere I will start getting warm humid air blowing out of the A/C vents. Sometimes it will start cooling again with a couple of minutes or sometimes for over half an hour.
Some days it works fine all day long some other days within a half an hour it turns off and then back on 5 times.
I have not been able to identify a pattern as to when it acts up the most and this has been happening for about 2 months now.
I'm in Miami and heat can get brutal specially having a baby inside which I need to drop off and pick up every day from daycare.
Anybody experienced anything like this? Any ideas/suggestions?

Hi inovillo,

Based on your MY and engine, there may be some additional STAR cases your FCA dealer can take a look at, to see if they might match the issue you're experiencing. Is the truck at the dealer now or back with you?

Thanks for the reply Kori, I have the truck in my possession now.
Have you seen or heard any similar complaints?

I personally have not, but that does not mean they aren't out there!

I found a defective electric fan, thought that was it but nothing. The truck never ran hot or anything hence why I hadn't realized. Couple days after I start smelling freon coming out of the A/C vents (at this point it's been like 3-4 days that it just doesn't cool. Needless to say, I had to remove the dash and changed the evaporator as at that point freon was leaking out. Re-assembled everything and after properly charging the system the truck has been cooling good 2 days now. I will give you an update in a week or so. The evap was very nasty/dirty as well so I took the opportunity to retrofit the A/C cabin filter with the cover as my truck did not come equipped with one, at least that way the evap will remain clean. I believe the lack of proper pressure in the A/c system was causing all sort of issues... or so I'm hoping!!

Those pictures should be sent directly to FCA and every single RAM owner should be able to go to a dealer and have THEM put cabin filters in our trucks. What a disappointment.

Did you figure out why it was doing it? My guess is the filth on there was restricting airflow causing it to freeze up and thaw. One too many freeze ups caused a rupture. Did you take more photos? I'm impressed at how you pulled the dash out like that.

Lack of a cabin air filter caused that IMO. It was the first mod I did to my truck after I bought it and I'm glad I did it after seeing those pics...

That right there should be good enough reason to add a filter. It will save you later.

I had no idea I didn't have one. This is my first vehicle (in many years) that doesn't come with a damn cabin filter. I'm still having the A/C randomly stop cooling, happens specially when RPM's are higher than 2K. Sometimes I put my kid in the car with the A/C on and it works fine (whether is been 2 minutes or 10) as soon as I start driving it's just a matter of a few minutes until it starts acting up. In other words, while driving, 90% of the times it just blows warm air. A/C is not leaking anymore after changing the evap... I just installed a new A/C pressure switch.
When the A/C stops cooling I see the clutch on the compressor also stopping but when I give power directly this never happens which leads me to believe there's something telling the compressor to stop because of xyz reasons. I will admit this is severely ******* me off already living in Miami and having a not even 2 year old baby with me twice a day everyday. Hopefully is the pressure switch, if not, I might have to start looking at other possible electronics.

A/C pressure switch DID NOT take care of the problem. :banghead:
I have 3 options left:
1. A/C controls
2. A/C compressor
3. Dump it in a canal!
I believe the A/C controls/module are known to go bad but I'm wondering what other people have experienced when the A/C controls/module is defective.

Are you able to monitor coolant temp on the gauge cluster? Sounds like you could be overheating.

Coolant temp is rock solid at 192. Fan and thermostat were replaced less than a year ago. Not an overheating issue...

Well, the compressor took care of the cooling situation. It's been working for the last 3 weeks without a problem.
Now, one of my A/C flaps is acting up! When I place the blower speed at the max it feels like if the knob was at the 2nd or 3rd line. Sometimes at full speed won't blow any but the blower itself still sounds if if it was blowing. Where the hell is my air going to??? This truck's A/C system is starting to become a nightmare...

Yup, I took everyone's advice and put a cabin air filter in my truck when I bought it new over 2 yrs ago. I'm so glad I did.

I'll have to look into it.

How do you know if you have a filter? I have a 2016 2500 and I don't remember seeing it mentioned in the manual.

If it doesn't have a filter - can someone point me to where I can get one or is Genos Garage the place?
Thanks

Pull the glove box door off, the cabin air filter door is behind it. Check to see if you have the door first as there are reports that some 2016 already have the cabin air filter door but no filter.

Geno's Garage sells a kit with the door and filter. If you already have the door, you just need: Wix Cabin Air Filter 24578 (or equivalent). That is the one included with the Geno's kit.

K&N have them also.
