Kicking around swapping in a new motor on my 99 2500 4x4. The old gas 5.9 is about shot I suspect, and rather than stuff another gas-hogging motor in it I am toying with the idea of dropping in a first-gen VE pump non-IC Cummins. The only roadblocks I'm seeing is getting the PCM to work (climate control, gauges, etc) with the old non-sensory motor. The Cummins will be a relatively simple two wire hookup, but getting the gauges and safety features to work is important to me.

I've been told the axles won't hold up. I hate to think they are so weak they can't handle 180 horse out of an old VE motor, but it is quite a bit heavier. Anyone done this without swapping axles?

I could see the front axle being a problem in a 1500 but in a 2500 I would think you'd be ok.
