Shoot me for being lazy but can I do the bearing adjustment without pulling the steering box? I've already adjusted the over center but it didn't eliminate the steering play.

Like ramburger is hinting at make sure it's the box before adjusting it. Adjusting too tight can bind the gears up.

Yes you can do it without removal. Just an Allen key or whatever on top

I made the over center adjustment it helped but I went as far as the tsb recommended for that adjustment. Next is the bearing preload. I can grab the steering shaft under the hood and rock it a good inch or so. Had someone rock the wheel back and forth with the wheels on the ground in can feel a very small amount of play. I think it's in the center/drag link but the play in the wheel is there before the pitman are responds to the steering wheel.
