If they build it, people will buy it.

Depends on a couple of things. #1 what's the MPG rating, #2 what's the cost over a Hemi?

Torque is a little higher than the 3.5 Ford EB but HP is MUCH lower.

Hallelujah!!! This is coming sooner than I expected. I don't think they have released official specs yet, but it will surely have at least the 240 bhp and 420 lb/ft that the Grand Cherokee is getting. I would imagine it might actually be a little higher due to the fact truck exhausts tend to have less bends (less restrictive). 245/425 would work splendidly in the Ram 1500. When mated with an 8 speed it will get great fuel economy when driven reasonably.

Now I won't have to go another winter with my current beast. It will be missed though...my father purchased it the day after I left his 1985 Jeep Cherokee with $400 scrap value in a bad accident on Mt Hood in early 1997. I took it from him in 2003. How time flies.

they can keep it. I'll take a CTD. New EcoDiesel has less HP and 10 more TQ than the 2013 Hemi. The MPG better be awesome. Same or better than the new V6

The diesel will blow the V6 fuel economy out of the water, and it will tow a lot more. My guess for diesel EPA ratings of at least:
19/28/23 for 2x4 & 18/26/21 for 4x4

EPA for 2013 with 3.6l & 8spd:
17/25/20 for 2x4 & 16/23/19 for 4x4

Unless you floor your Hemi all the time, the diesel will feel more powerful. It has much more torque at low rpms. You won't have to do more than tap the pedal to get it to go. My guess is the diesel will be about as fast as the V6 at WOT, but that doesn't get close to explaining how great driving a diesel feels. I drove a V6 gasoline Porsche Cayenne for a few days while my wife's Porsche Cayenne diesel was having a ding in the bumper fixed. On paper the two vehicles are just as fast as each other, but the gasoline engine felt totally anemic compared to the diesel. You had to make it work so much harder just to accelerate to freeway speeds.

Meh
A hemi and diesel Cherokee were tested in Canada, the hemi averaged 18.8 mpg an the diesel averaged 28.7
With a $1500 price tag for the diesel it would take 30,000 of replicating those numbers before you started saving any money on fuel
In 100,000 miles you'll save maybe $3500

I personally don't think it'll be easy to put much more power out of the motor either
300hp/500 ft-lb is probably its upper limit IMO
It has small bore and long stroke, rated for 4800 rpm it'll be screaming

It's going in a half ton pickup, why would you want more hp/tq out of it? At 240hp/420tq it's already rated higher than a first gen Cummins. I guess I don't care about how fast my truck can get to 100 mph. I want decent pulling power, fuel economy, and reliability. (A lot to ask for, I know)

Also, you can't just say that the higher cost cancels out the fuel savings. Most people base whether they can afford a vehicle on what it will cost them each month. A $10-20/month higher payment is easily negated by fuel savings in that case.

Plus, you will more than likely get the extra cost of the diesel back at trade-in time.

Of course, if you plan to pay it off, that's a whole different story.

Just my thoughts...

I just don't see the point. Ya want a diesel, ya get the Cummins, ya get a 2500 or 3500. Nuff said.

I agree on both accounts. If you want a proven diesel you get a Cummins.
I was really hoping that the 1500 would have a Cummins, but oh well I will keep my 2500.

I think you're missing the point that not everybody "needs" a Cummins or 2500/3500. This is a different engine for a different application. If the guys over at Chrysler can incorporate some different technology into their vehicles and stay on top of the continuously developing and rapidly evolving truck market, then why wouldn't they?

I think we are forgetting that Ram is likely looking at the world market. Full size pickup trucks are not very common in certain parts of the world. Diesels are. Ram will likely sell alot of these trucks overseas into new markets. The diesel Chrysler 300/Lancia Thema are common in some parts of Europe and not seen here. Even right hand drive diesel 300s are being built here in Ontario and shipped overseas. Add the overseas market to North America and a 1/2 ton full size diesel truck makes good corporate sense. 0 to 60 times mean very little to most people worldwide.

You make a good point.

I think the point that many are missing is the fact there is supposed to be a large capability difference between a light and heavy duty truck. I love the idea of having a Cummins, but it is way more than I would ever need. I have never needed to tow over 10,000 lbs and rarely do I put more than 1500 lbs in the bed of my truck. Yes, a smaller Cummins would have been nice, but I guess it didn't make financial sense to Chrysler/Fiat.

Obviously this option isn't for everyone, but it is a godsend for people who need light truck capability, want to have real world combined fuel economy in the 20s, and don't want to settle for a V6 that lacks torque...oh, and HOLY CRAP is the 3.0l diesel going to have a huge driving range with a 32 gallon tank!!!
