After 2 weeks and about 500 miles I am getting about 15-16 mpg on my new completely stock 2012. Mostly driving on country back roads and a little highway. Basically this is the same as i was seeing on my '09 Hemi. I am hoping to hit 17-18 on the same routes once she is broke in.

I have owned plenty of diesel trucks. They are more expensive to own and operate. The up front cost, maintenance, fuel, etc. All more. Buy one if you need it, and/or want it. You won't save money though :)

Disclaimer...this is based off of my experience and many others as well.

This is my first diesel too. Traded in my '09 Hemi to make pulling our camper easier. So far I like it but would have kept my '09 if it handled the camper better.

I have read many posts that the new emissions equipment can add extra maintenance costs if the truck is not worked hard on a regular basis. Not trying to discourage you... Just something else to consider...

Of course you can delete the emissions equipment and skip these problems if you don't care about you factory warranty. I am planning to do this some time next year.

I just came back from a 450 mi weekend, driving the interstate at 80 mph I was getting 19.5 mpg. Overall combined with alot of 35 mph highways and trails I was at 17 mpg. My truck only has a 1200 miles after the trip so it is not broke in, manual says 6k until max milage is reached.
At 1200 miles my DEF reads 1/2, so I am guessing approximately 2400 miles between DEF fill ups, I believe that is 8 gals at less than $3 a gallon from the pumps.
As far as annual cost ?? This is my first diesel, and have been very impressed.

First diesel also,a 2013 2500 Laramie. i had a 2012 1500 Laramie limited, loved the truck but I'm pulling a 276 TT and even with air bags it just didn't feel planted..I'm averaging about 15.5 in so far mostly city driving(only 532 miles on the truck),the 1500 with the Hemi was doing a bit less, that with a K&N and an aftermarket muffler.

I just traded my 2012 2500 HEMI for a 2013 6.7 CTD, and my regular weekend trip is 220 Miles one way with an averaged 16mpg in the HEMI. With my first trip in the CTD I got 23 mpg on the same trip driving 60-65 miles per hour. I heard about the DEF cost along with up front cost, the long term is awesome the diesel will last for nearly ever and there is a higher trade in. Hope this helped?

My stepdad has a 2012 3500 single rear wheel. It gets about 15 or 16. My friends dad has a 2011 or 12 2500. It was getting about 15. They hooked a superchip up to it and it's around 20 now.

I traded my 2010 Ram 1500 for a 2013 Ram 2500 Laramie in July. This was my first diesel so I was wondering the same thing. Over the past 6 months I've averaged 17.1 with a good mix of city and hwy. occasionally I pulled a double SeaDoo trailer but the truck didn't seem to notice. 6" lift with 37"s. Hope this helps.

My 2014 2500 CTD...just got it, and have hand calculated two tanks of gas now, to and from work 50/50 highway and in town two 4 lane, 38 miles round trip, I am getting 16.3 MPG. EVIC says I am getting 18.5. So it is fairly close, or closer than any other car calculated MPG indicator.

I fill up at just under 1/4 tank and it takes 24-25 gallons, and at $3.87 a gallon it cost just under $100 to fill. So, not too bad compared to my F450 that I traded in that would take $140 to fill.

I have a 2013 2500 Laramie Longhorn CTD with 4200 miles and I've made a couple 400 mile trips and always avg at least 19.5. If I keep it around 65mph then I get as good as 21.5 mpg. Around town I avg 17 mpg which isn't bad with all the stop and go. I've made a few trips to the scrap yard hauling 2000lb loads eveytime through town and my mpg droped to 15.5. I don't think that's too bad but I know it could be better. Hopefully they will develop a programmer soon for the 2013 CTD.

Bully Dog has a 'street' tuner for the '13s already. Its big $$$. I don't know of anyone that has taken the plunge to know if it is worth it or not.

Did not know that. I haven't really checked into programmers for a while tho. Thanks for the info.

I'm interested to see how that interfaces with the after-treatment, unless you have to eliminate it. Diesel particulate filters and the catalyst can be funny... Not to mention the EGR.
