Has anyone shortened the door lock knobs? They stick up about 1/2 inch when locked and I'm often bumping my arm on them when I rest it on the windowsill. I'd like them to be flush with the door when locked.

On some older cars it used to be you could just unscrew them and shorten them, but on my 2014 Ram it doesn't seem as tho they'll unscrew. Just wondering if anyone has done this, or has had the door apart and can send me a pic of the assembly so I know what this'd take.

Thanks in advance.

They'll unscrew, they're just really tight at first. I don't know if they're any different than my '11, but I shortened mine til they were flush to the top when locked and stick up a 1/2-5/8" unlocked. Had to drill the hole deeper to keep the rod from bottoming out inside.

I can get you some pictures later today if you'd like.

That'd be much appreciated. Sounds like you did exactly what I planned.

The last pic shows that I cut it down to 1-1/2".

Then I drilled the hole inside a 1-1/4" deep with a 5/32" bit.

I might have to do that. There is no reason for those stupid things to pop up anyways as the door unlocks when you pull the handle.

Great idea. Added to my list!

These would be more awesome if Billet Technology or similar made them.

Most likely they do. Betcha it's a pretty common screw thread, so knobs from another car (Challenger, Charger maybe?) would possibly work.

Just got done doing this mod. Didn't have to even shorten the knobs, just drilled them out about 1/2 inch deeper than they were, then when I reinstalled them, tightened them down that extra 1/2 inch. Now when locked they are flush with the top of the door, and my elbow no longer hits the knob.

An A+ mod! Super simple, costs nothing, very effective. Recommended!
