I run a bottle of Techron through every oil change...whether it's truly snake oil or not I'll leave the professionals to discuss but it makes me feel good lol. In past cars though I've used seafoam introduced via the brake booster line also; but I don't feel it's necessary on a 2014 with 20K miles.

I'm a believer in all Lucas products and use their fuel additive. The power steering fluid they sell 100% stopped the leak in one of my other trucks. Never leaked a drop in the last 65,000miles I drove it.
Not a huge company, but their office is about a 10 minute from my house. Makes me feel good, supporting a local company.

I only use TCW3--->It is Ashless and Loaded with Detergents...
I use it in my 7.3L PSD and makes an amazing difference in the noise from the injectors...

Also the TCW3 has a higher BTU rating then Gasoline or Diesel !!

Lucas slipped my mind! When Oriellys has Lucas Fuel Treatment on sale I will normally if I am around and think about it will stock up-->{Buy 5 to 10 5oz bottles}... I use it in place of the TCW3!

I think walmart is the go to for Lucas. Pick up the 32oz bottle for $9.99. Its not as easy as pouring the single serving bottle in, but its a lot cheaper.

BG 44K as the only fuel additive I use unless it's not available at the time, then I use seafoam.

Opti-Lube and Other Diesel Fuel Additives - questions.

Hi Everyone: I know this topic has probably been discussed to death, but honestly, I cannot get a straight definitive answer from anyone, including my service tech. as to 1) why I need to use a diesel fuel additive, 2) how often should I be adding a diesel fuel additive, and 3) what additive is recommended.

I have a 2015 RAM 3500 Longhorn dually, 6.7 turbo diesel, with two fuel filters, Aisin trans. crew cab, long bed.

I have been adding Opti-Lube, 8oz, every 1000 miles.

Here's the link to what I'm using: Amazon.com: Opti-Lube XPD Formula Diesel Fuel Additive: 1 Gallon with Accessories (1 hand pump & 2 empty 8oz bottle): Automotive

We travel, a lot, with a heavy payload, (see attached picture), so we cannot simply target high-end, high inventory turn, type fuel stops all of the time. We try to target the major suppliers but sometimes you get what you can get. So far, no issues.

Are there any experienced diesel mechanics that can shed some definitive light on this subject?

Thanx .... Dan

you want a straight answer?

if you buy all that additive stuff, your truck will run very long.
if you don't buy all that additive stuff, you truck will run very long.
difference: the amount of money you have in your pocket.

everybody who tells you something different, just want to sell you that stuff.

there is nobody in this whole wide world ever giving a reliable, repeatable and sustainable proof, that all that stuff, what people put additionally to the traditional motor oil or fuel in their tanks and engines, is good for your engine. And there is also no proof ever since engines exist, that one engine lasted longer than the other, because of the additives or because no additives are used.
people who use additives are mostly more concerned about doing something good for their vehicle, and take automatically more care of their vehicle- and that's why their vehicles looking better and lasting longer, than the ones abused from their owners. actually you can say- additives are the placebo for motorhead ocd's.

you want to put it in- put it in. you don't, then leave it. It doesn't make a difference. believe me. I'd rather spend my money on things which really count, like good tires or good brake pads. I get my gas in the morning and never right after the tanker filled up the tanks at the gas station. I never had a problem. No matter what gas, diesel or oil you use- they all meet a certain standard and one is for sure- they are all better than 10, 20, 30 years ago. don't believe it? well, then you have to spend your money. if you do, congratulations- you saved money equivalent to a $100 pay raise.

you want proof? I had in Germany a 2002 VW Bus with 5 cylinder conventional diesel. against all advise from self named "experts" I drove this van on SALAD OIL BOUGHT AT ALDI 200000 miles cross Europe. I was in every country there and I drove the heck out of it. never had a problem, never had a start issue, the fuel mileage was the same like with conventional diesel. the only difference was: it stank to high heaven like French fries. kept tailgaters off my back
I sold this van with ~250000 miles on the odometer and the buddy of mine who bought it, drove it another 100k miles till it finally gave up because the corrosion was too much. The engine still ran fine. and yes- he also got the salad oil from aldi.

I am ocd with all of my vehicles but I do not add any additives to any of them, I just use quality gas ie Shell and motor on down the road.

I guess I'm the odd man out, but I use Marvel's mystery oil. I pour the recommended amount in the gas tank as an additive, and I pour a little in the engine a few days before oil change time. I buy the 32 OZ bottles at Wally World for about 4 bucks. That covers me for about 3 fill ups.
