I have been working with Sean aka Hemifever to dial in a tune for my truck. After an extensive on-line search, I came to the conclusion the Hemi would run on E85. I contacted Sean who offered to write a tune. No new fuel pump. No new lines. Same fuel injectors. Just a Hemifever custom E85 tune.
Results: After 2 weeks and 700 miles of driving, testing, and many WOT runs. The truck runs better than ever. Way more power than the 89 octane tune I was running. Why? Because the E85 I'm running is rated at 100 octane, so Sean was able to crank up the timing.
Benefits: 1. Power- I would estimate 15 HP over a 93 tune and 30 HP over the 89 tune I was running. 2. E85 is cheap. I paid $1.69 today instead of $2.69 for Premium fuel. 3. Runs clean- Found a video on youtube that compares gas to e85 showing how clean it burns. Not only will it not build carbon like gas but it will remove the three years of carbon build up already in my engine. 4. Its smells good- Really, pleasant bonus. My truck smells like sweet vodka. 5. Smooth- The truck never ran so smooth, at idle and while cruising, its unreal. 6. Clean emissions- Burns more completely and produces less emissions. 7. Supports American farmers- An added bonus of sending my money to the Midwest instead of the Middle East.
To the naysayers. Modern cars are made with Ethanol in mind. Regular gas is E10 and the EPA approved E15 which will become the standard at a gas station near you. All cars made since 2001 can tolerate Ethanol. Just to be safe I looked up the fuel pump on my truck. Same fuel pump as the 4.7L Ram, which is Flex Fuel. Also, I data logged the Injector pulse width to see if the stock fuel system is keeping up with the extra fuel needed. Short answer. Yes. They do get close to 90% but that is at WOT at 6000 rpms on a modded truck. True, you wouldn't want to run at 90% capacity all the time but for the 1/10 of a second my truck is at 6000 rpms I'm cool with it. And my A/F ratio is dead on 12.7 @ WOT.
Summary: I'm super happy. The truck runs great. The fuel is clean. The only down side is there is 1 gas station near me that carries E85 but I talked to the manager and he has assured me he will continue to carry the fuel.
Thanks to Sean @ Hemifever for taking the time to dial in my E85 tune. Really great work. Just a class act.
PS: Oh yeah. I know we all like to talk about peak HP. But where the Ethanol really shines is the low end torque. Part throttle is where I do 99.9% of my driving, and the low end torque feels like when I went from 3.35 gears to 4.10 gears. Super cool stuff.
UPDATE: The EVIC is way off. I am only getting 13.1 mpg with E85. Still cheaper rhan running 91 or 93 octane fuel.
