Hello all,
Recently bought a 2011 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi. This is my first Chrysler product, I’ve owned only fords before and they treated me pretty well.
I’m having a strange problem where my truck won’t start. It only does it sometimes and usually first thing in the morning. If I use the remote start or the key, the truck just cranks and cranks with no sputtering or any signs of trying to start. If I turn the key fob off and back on about 7 times, it will crank right up and will run until I turn it off again. Sometimes it will do it right away after shutting off and restarting. I’m thinking something to do with fuel pump, but not sure. Anyone ever heard of this?

Thank you.

I've read reports of the key switch giving troubles, but that doesn't sound like it's necessarily your problem. Is it throwing any codes? All starting goes through the ECM.

Do you know the status of the Fob's battery? I might consider replacing it because if it's 2011 and never been replaced, might be time to do so. Also, have you ever checked/replaced the spark plugs? On the pre-2013's they use standard plugs 2x/cyl and they don't last all that long. Manual says to change them every 30k miles. After 2013 (as I recall) they used 100k mi plugs. Doesn't sound like it's plugs necessarily but all starting goes through the ECM so if it's looking for some level of sparkage and the computer isn't 'seeing' it, maybe it isn't allowing it to fulfill the start sequence??

Sorry I can't be more helpful, just throwing out some ideas.

How old is the battery? Strange things happen when the battery isn't 100%.

Hi ScottCantrelle,

Sorry to hear about your concerns! If you end up deciding to visit your local dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to offer assistance if needed. Just send us a PM with your VIN and let me know.

Truck did it this morning. Turning the key off and on about 7 times then the truck will start right up... starting to sound like an ECM issue maybe? Don’t really want to take this truck to the dealer but I will if I have to.

It's happened to me about 3 times. Does a half crank and doesn't start. Only one time did it do this when actually trying to start the truck with a key. I have a "lost communication with body control module" permanent code that apparently doesn't mean anything.

It sounds like the TIPM problem that is common in the 11 trucks. Search TIPM on here and the web. There is a guy out there on the web who sells by-pass kits and repaired TIPMs.

Wow I wish I would have read this sooner. I just figured this out for myself and didn’t even think to check my old post until just now. Bypass is installed and truck works perfectly fine now. Thank you.
