I was on the fence on if I should get a hood protector for my truck and when I decided I wanted one, I couldn't find a color matched one from Mopar but I think I got the next best thing. It is an AVS Aeroskin Hood Protector that sits flush and is more a "hood protector" vs a "bug deflector". I had no idea there was a difference until just a few weeks ago and there are some out there that doubt its effectiveness. Enough on that - The hardest part was getting it squared up and from there, it was just peel and stick. For my particular color, I think the smoked one looks best. Chrome looks good on lighter colors, IMHO.

I like how it sits flush with the hood. Not a bad deal at $65 from autoanything.

It does look nice. My only concern would be anything that could get under it and trapped. This would be true to and and grit that could rub against the paint under there. I put clear bra on my front end. The roads here in NC tend to have all sorts of tiny stones and such that get flung up and could chip the paint.

That looks cool, I have been thinking of these how thick is it? I thought it was a tape type vs plastic. How durable do you think it is? Thanks Joe

I thought about if dirt were to get under it but with the placement, I think water would be my only concern. I wrestled with the decision because it is definitely a commitment once it is on. I know that part of the hood would fade differently with any amount of exposure not to mention the marks from the double-sided tape would make this a semi-permanent install.

As to the question of its thickness, it is made by AVS and they are the ones that make vent visors so from what I've seen, it is as think it is at least as thick as those. I'm more concerned with the scratch resistance, to be honest. Time will tell on that one.

Agreed! I have one on mine. It hides the stone chips from the previous owner.

I purchased the same one for my truck, but decided not to install it for two reasons. First, it will likely fade the hood differently and leave adhesive 'marks' should it ever be removed. Second, I have the Prairie Pearl truck and this looked like the hood had a mustache. I'm not against mustaches, but it just looked kind of odd with the lighter paint.

I would still like to add a deflector, so I'm considering one that bolts to the underside of the hood.

I fail to see the point with a entire painted front end.
Sure your hood will have clean chip free paint under that, but what about the grill and bumper?

Think a clear bra is the only real solution for these trucks.
(hence I went with a Chrome front on my 2500)

The tape is not continuous so there are plenty of pathways for water. It covers about the same area as the "Bug Deflector" so paint fade will be similar over a long period. As for grit and grime, I spray under mine when cleaning the truck, it is fastened to the hood so they move together so shouldn't cause scratching unless something large gets under there. small dirt and grime can be sprayed out.

Tape markings and the fade are the only concerns I think there really is, but I also think it is like a fender flare, once you make the commitment its pretty much locked in. But so is a rock chip!

It looks OK, but I'd be more worried about junk getting between it and the hood. IMO, it sits too close -- almost like the old vinyl hood protectors. But those, you could at least remove and clean under. I hate rock chips as well, but I also think a clear bra is the way to go.

As an FYI, you can remove that silly "AVS" logo with mineral spirits. The sooner you do it, the easier it will be. I've done so in the past (twice). It does no harm to the shield. Just use a MF or soft cloth. It will take some elbow grease, but it will come off, and look much cleaner.

I got one on my dark blue truck and it looks good. Been on for 1.5 years and still sticks like the first day it went on.

I did it in the mall parking lot last night. It was just a sticker on the protector. It looks nice and clean now.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I'm pretty happy with it. I'm now wondering if I should wax it or just use Rain-X on it. I don't want white wax residue showing on it so Rain-X might be my better option.

I agree with White Express---I think a Clear Bra would be better for the front bumper, grill shell and the front part of the hood. You could also add a bug deflector if you wanted, but at least you would have all the major painted areas on the front end protected from chips from small rocks etc. It is expensive though--mine cost about $750 installed for my '10 Sports.

Im assuming you have the Aeroskin and it fits the Sport hood?
I just ordered it for my truck.
