I 2nd doing a band adjustment. Peace of mind is a hell of a lot cheaper than a rebuild. Also a shift kit would add to the peace of mind while you have it open.

You'll need the extension if you go with the test port. I went to autozone and got a couple fittings and made one.

Some good pop rivets along with some sandpaper and paint will bring it back to life. If you can't get it riveted, some good two part poxy would be just as good.
