On my 1997 ram 1500 my rpms jumped as my oil pressure dropped to nothing before the engine stalled. There is compression in all cylinders. The only noise it made before dying was metal on metal.

Sounds like oil pump died. At minimum pull the pan and inspect

That sounds almost exactly like mine before the pump gear shattered into 3 pieces. Metal cat noises, no stall, followed by no oil pressure and more death metal noises for the next 30 miles down the highway, at night, with an enclosed trailer. I wouldn't worry too much about engine damage as long as you don't start it again. Mine was still running the next day when I started looking for a new engine.

This is usually the noise of a very expensive intensive care holiday and then a funeral ...
Your mechanic will be happy to open your engine and recive a lot of $$$ from you!
