Does anyone else have a rough engine idle with their Power Wagon? My PW will randomly shake at idle. Almost like it has big cams but it not constant. I comes and goes. Once on the gas it seems to run fine. Just wondering if this is normal or do I need to make an appointment with the dealer?

had the sensation once a couple times and im at 2k miles on an 18.

i had a hellcat that shook like crazy and loped so low for a stock car. always made me insecure about idling and eating while parked. i was surprised i felt it in the PW

Most likely your Fuel Saving MDS system. It shuts off cylinders at low throttle / load situations.

Many cannot even notice it, but those mechanically 'in tune' with their vehicles often go nuts when the 'cadence' of the engine changes. It both sounds and feels as thought the ignition is dropping cylinders - which is exactly what it is doing. But in this day and age, they say that is a good thing, as you do gain a MPG or two.

Both my '07 1500 with the 5.7 did it, and now my 2016 PW with the 6.4 does it to. I was glad to be rid of it in my 2013 PW with the 5.7, though no telling what it cost me in additional fuel.

I try to ignore it, but it always catches my attention when I sense it, and it makes me crazy. Apparently if you remove the resonator or change to an aftermarket Cat-Back type (louder) exhaust, the sound is even more pronounced. Thus, I haven't whacked my resonator yet on the '16.

Most 'non car' people (my wife) has never noticed it, even when I point it out. If you are rolling along with the A/C or Heater Fan on, the radio up a little or with the windows down, it is hard to detect, and generally a non-issue.

Perhaps some Hand Held Tuners can shut it off, but I understand it operates off of oil pressure to the lifters. So, other than that, we are pretty much stuck with it.

Some can accept it, knowing what it is, and forget about it, other nuts like me just have to suffer, or just be a little heavier on the throttle and avoid coasting around - which it does very little of anyway.

*Roll up the windows, make the cab as quiet as possible and idle down a level side street. Roll into and out of the throttle. If you detect the sensation you describe, and it goes away as you roll into the throttle, be happy. All is normal.

Yes, with my 2016 6.4 I have experienced the same with the MDS on at idle.

Would MDS kick in while the truck is idling in park?

I can't say since I have only experienced it once last week while in park and at idle after dropping over 5,000 feet in altitude when I arrived in California from my home in Colorado. It hasn't done it again. I just thought it was the computer adjusting to the altitude difference or something. The MDS sounds like a better explanation for it though.

The technical descriptions of how it operates would make it seem like it would activate at idle.

Probably harder to detect because without any load at all, it would make it harder to hear a difference in the exhaust. At the same time, sitting stationary, the change in power pulses would make those slight vibrations more noticeable as rolling 'road vibrations' would be removed from the equation.

I will have to check it out... I just got the '16. Let me drive it a few more days, and I will be able to provide more real world info to compare.

But, if i recall correctly, my '07 1500 4x4 with the 5.7 would do it at idle. Perhaps it is just a little more noticeable in the 6.4L .

I notice it regularly as I idle more than I like at sites. It is definitely easy to feel. I was wondering the same thing in regards to MDS but it's hard to justify as I have the average mpg on the dash activated and I can watch it go down when idling.

I do get the stutter at idle in mine, it's nowhere near as noticeable as in my Camaro SS though, and the Camaro's MDS doesn't activate at idle.
