Finally got a chance to complete a project that I have been bouncing around for a few weeks. My truck is a white tradesman with the chrome appearance package so I have chrome bumpers and a chrom grill, but the plastic bumper cover above the front bumper was still black. It just never looked right to me.

So, I removed it and dupli color rattle canned it. Came out pretty good I think. Atleast better than it was.IMG_1714.JPGIMG_1715.JPG

I should note the disgusting chevy in the background is my brothers loaner from the dealer. He bought a 2016 Ram with 30,000 miles this week and had a check engine light come on after not even having it 24 hrs. So back it went and they gave him this 2018 silverado with only 490 miles as a loaner. I am not impressed with it at all.

Looks good!!!! You might think of putting a piece of that 3M clear bra material on top of it to help avoid rock chips.

I also had a 2018 Silverado while having service done to my truck. I totally agree definitely not my choice vehicle wise lol.

Get some extra fine steel wool and lightly scuff it up and reshoot the clear in thin layers allowing about 1.5 hrs between coats then the next weekend clay bar it

Did you sand it first or just clean and paint it?

I sanded it with 80 grit, then 100 and 120. Nothin to fine. Its the textured version of the bumper cover and the texture still shows. Then cleaned with alcohol. I then sprayed a prime/adhesion promoter, then regular primer in several coats sanding with 600 between a few coats. Then on went the duplicolor PW7. Used 2 cans of that total and then duplicolor clear coat, 2 cans as well. Not a professional painter and dont claim to be and the way I did it may not be the correct way but I am pleased with the results.

Its such an odd setup on the interior and doesn’t have near the get up and go as my 2014 Ram. Its also got an extremely cheap feel to the interior and doesn’t handle near as well as my Ram. I do realize that is completely subjective.

If it wasn’t a daily driver/work truck, I probably would spend more time on it. As for now though, I am going to leave it as is and just see what happens. I’m just glad its not black anymore. I dont want to spend a whole lot of time on it as its the textured bumper cover anyway and I’m not taking the time to sand out the textured finish. In the future if I want to make it better, I will purchase the smooth non-textured version and spend more time with it.

How hard is it remove this piece? Does the whole bumper come off?

I was worried about this as well as I couldnt find any info on how hard it was to remove and paint. Hopefully this thread helps others wanting to do the same.

Open your hood and there is like a foamy material air dam type cover over the radiator and top of the grill held in by i think 6 push pins. Pull all those and take that cover off (10 seconds to do). Then take out the 4 screws holding the top of the grill in, all 4 are on top easy to see and are 10mm heads. The grill then has plastic tabs holding it in, 2 on left side and 2 on the right. I just pulled somewhat swiftly on each side of the grill and they popped out. Takes 2 minutes max to remove grill.

Then remove the headlights. Its easier to watch a video on that than to explain. It is not hard at all to do. Just google “4th gen Ram headlight removal”, multiple returns will pop up including videos. Probably what took the longest to remove but still easy once you watch a video on it.

After the headlights are out, the bumper cover has one 8mm headed screw in the front of each wheel well, and then one 10mm headed screw holding the cover on in the inside of the fender below were the headlight was. If you cant find them, you will see them when you start pulling the cover out of the tabs holding it on the truck.

It takes no time to disassemble and reassemble once you do it one time. I could probably disassemble it now down to the bumper in less than 5 minutes, no joke. I took it all apart and removed the cover to paint and then put it all back together minus the bumper cover so I could drive the truck the few days it took to paint and let the cover dry.

Hopefully that all makes sense. I can take pics if you or anyone else wants to undertake this project and has more questions. As i said, its easier to watch a video on the headlight removal than explain it here, but removing them is not hard.

It crossed my mind to do the mirrors. Never thought about the door handles, did you just tape them off and do it?
