Last night I gave hypermilling a shot to see how low good I could get my mileage to be. The results were surprising.

My truck:
2014 Ram 1500 Longhorn. 4x4 Hemi 3.92 gears. 8 speed
5" lift
35" Goodyear duratracs (70 lbs per tire)

Conditions:
Elevation: 800 ft
Temperature: 29°C one way, 20°C on return trip. (84°F & 68°C)

Road had a bunch of good flat spots, but also had some in town driving with stops (3 towns 20 mins of in town driving and stops. Caught a bunch of lights too -_-) There were also some small and large hills I had to go over.

Technique:
- 80 kmh (50mph) on cruise. When going up hill I went off cruise in attempt to keep my RPM'S low. Usually would fluctuate speed on his between 75-80 trying to stay as close to 80 as possible.

- AC on lowest setting with low fan speed on the way out. Vented seat was used the whole time both ways.

- Way back I didn't use AC because it wasn't hot enough outside. Just had the fan on setting 4.

Mods:
Diablo Trinity with Hemifever 91 tune B (Shell 91 octane fuel)
S&B Cold Air Intake
MBRP cat back exhaust
Freshly emptied catch can ;) (Lol)

Results:
The evic measured 10.6 L/100 kms. (27 Imperial MPG or 22 US mpg)

I burned 18.5 L of fuel (4.88 gal) over the course of 181 kms. (112.5 miles)

Hand calculated this converts to 10.28 L/100 kms (27.5 imperial mpg, or 22.9 US mpg)

I filled at the same gas station before and after the trip.

Pics to show I'm not bull****ting..lol

Fill up as I was leaving town:

Lowest mileage reading on the trip:

I'm going to do it again tonight. The road tonight has steeper hills than last night so we'll see how it goes! I'll post up my results tonight or tomorrow. Sean has sent me a new tune (revision D) so I'll install that one tonight and see how it works.

To put it in perspective, my best mileage before the lift (same engine mods) was 9.8 L/100 kms. (24 US mpg) doing 90 kmh (55 mph) on cruise with normal A/C use and no passing. 10 KMH makes a big difference!

And yet people will ***** and whine when my regular cab, 4x2, lowered truck with even more mods and essentially a ram air system gets 22mpg while drafting in traffic.

That said I love the idea. It would be interesting if there was an easy way to calculated elevation differences and what not... Ah well.

What kind of gas do you put in it? E10 or 100% gas?

Yeah it was pretty cool to try! It's amazing how much you can increase fuel consumption just by changing your driving habits.

I believe it's 100% gas. Shell V-Power 91 octane. It doesn't say anything about ethanol being in the 91. It does say that the 87 octane may contain up to 10% though.

Statistically I saw where driving habits can make for up to a 80% difference in highway MPGs.

Absolutely. Driving habits make tons of difference, and no amount of mods can overcome poor habits.

Slowing down is the best way to get better MPG, but it's also the 100% absolute hardest thing for most people to do.

Slowing down isn't the whole part though.

When I'm shooting for MPGs, I'll speed up going down hills and let the truck slow down going uphill. That way your engine is never working as hard.

not to shabby, now imagine a 4x4 Hemi rcsb (mine) with 3:21"s stock everything as far as engine, tires etc and going on a 11,000 km trip doing no more than 97kmph. The mileage was fantabulous

Yeah I tried that technique too, worked well!

Yep,,, momentum/roller coaster,,, In slight grades, its keeping an even pedal up and down hills. Drop some MPH going up the hill, gently gain it back on the downside,,, (Even better if you can gain it back in MDS mode).

~Drafting~ (Not Nascar style,,, Can/should be done safely without tailgating) Pay attention to the wind / surrounding traffic. Some of the best MPG I've ever gotten was in multi-lane/multi-vehicle traffic where I wasn't the only one busting all the wind.

Coasting to stops. (Minimal use of brakes to avoid loss of the momentum you obtained earlier under power) You can either take advantage of the fuel shut off system to slow down a bit quicker (zero pedal) or ever so lightly hold a small fraction of peddle to milk the MDS for all it's worth during a 'slightly prolonged' decell,,,

In the big scheme of things, it really doesn't take THAT much more time to get to your destination using these methods, but the MPG gains are noticeable.

Didn't end up doing it tonight. I did on three way down, evic read 10.0 L/100 kms at one point. There were some nasty long/steep hills at the end (4 of them) that just ruined my mileage. It jumped 1 L/100 kms from the hills alone. On the way back I just did 90-100 kmh (55-60 mph) and averaged 11.8 according to the evic. Still good but hypermilling good!

That's awesome. I would have never thought those big tires could return such good mpg.

Slow and steady is what gets good mpg. I've played with my truck on short runs. I had the Lie-o-meter over 23 mpg. Not sure what the real number was, tho.

Nice truck. I try to baby mine around town but it's frustrating with the 3.21's and slow acceleration when pussyfooting. I wish I had gotten the 3.92's but on the highway the 3.21's are great with plenty of power and it only drops to 7th for large overpasses. Mine is 2WD with stock 20's. I am happier giving it decent throttle and accelerating normally, gas is so cheap right now, wtf ever. Your mileage is great though.

Slow roller hit the nail on the head!!!! Best mileage from my truck is on the interstate "in traffic". Wind resistance has a very profound affect on MPG's!

And the RAM with it's best in class Aerodynamics is slightly less affected by wind / faster speeds than other light duty trucks,,,

Like any other vehicle, driving faster takes more power. Aerodynamics do play a good part in determining how much power you'll need to do it.

IMHO, this (combined with ~everyone's~ desire to drive fast) may somewhat account for the EcoB Ferds not quite living up to their advertised MPG rates.

Honestly, I'm a bit intrigued by the whole 'small-boosted' direction Ford has taken. I'm 'of the opinion' that given my (conservative?) driving habits, I may be able to (someday) benefit from that 'direction'.

But, for the rest of the crowd,,, meh,,, haul ass = burn gas, Doesn't matter if it's a boosted 6 or an N/A 8!! LOL!
