Hello. I have a 98 1500 4x4 5.9 standard cab with a 6.5 bed. I'm getting ready to change my front brakes and was thinking of upgrading to the 80mm 7500 gvw 2500 calipers. I run stock 265/75R16 tires. Would this be a good upgrade? I would like to get better braking but don't want the wheels to lock up. Also how would this affect the pedal feel? Would it be softer do to the larger piston? I was thinking of using metallic pads instead of ceramic. Thanks for any help.

That's pretty much the only upgrade for 2nd gens. I went with PowerStop's towing kit and it has been great. Be sure to replace your hoses, too. They deteriorate from the inside and you can loose pedal feel as they age. The other upgrade would be using GM 1-ton wheel cylinders in the rear (late 90's OBS). They are a cheap upgrade and give you better pedal feel as well.

Thanks for the reply. I think for now I'm going to hold off on the 1 ton wheel cylinder upgrade. I don't want to over brake the truck since this is only a single cab short bed. I did go ahead and picked up the 80mm clippers . I don't want to lock up the brakes that's why I chose not to go with the 85mm. I did go with ceramic pads. I don't know if that was a good idea or not but I can always switch them back to semi metallic if I don't like it. The hoses are only three years old but maybe I will switch them out anyway.

I would look into converting to the 2000-2001 1500 stuff, dual piston

So let’s see pics of your truck! Single cab 4x4s are not that common.

A buddy of mine was the 2nd owner of a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Standard Cab with the 6 cylinder engine.
It originally was Registered in Mexico

It had a Heavy Duty Frame & 3/4 ton brakes
It was factory original. no mods

If you were to have a chance to see a 2018 Ram 1500 Standard Cab built for use in Mexico, it would also have a 3/4 ton frame & brakes

I would not be surprised if all 1500s had 3/4 ton frames & brakes. I'm not saying they do, but i would not b surprised
After all why would they ship 1500 frames down to Mexico, when they have loads of 2500 frames already
