I just joined here so I am going to start a project thread so you guys can check out my truck.

Here is the story behind my truck and pictures to go along with it.

My dad got the truck in 86 or 87. It was a slant six four speed truck, eventually it got a midly built 400 and four speed. That motor eventually was grenaded by a faulty cam breaking and busting the block, it was replaced by a 318 and automatic from a diplomat. He drove it like that for years and it was the truck I grew up in. Eventually the truck was just used for hauling trash off and it blew a headgasket and dad parked it. It ended up setting in the yard for 8 years with trash in the bed of it. Two years ago I asked him about it and he told me if I could fix it I could have it.

I started out buying some parts here and there and getting ready to start its journey back to being a drivable truck. I bought a 93 dodge van off my stepdad for a donor vehicle and started my process of getting a motor and trans ready for the truck.

The Magnum 318 out of the van was a relatively low millage motor and had been serviced regularly so I decided to not rebuild it just do a few things and put it in.

I had a 89 360 roller cam welded and reground into the cam I wanted. Its a 206/212 Duration .512/.522 on a 107 LSA. I also converted it back over to carb and put a four speed behind it.

Here's what it looked like after I pulled it out of the spot it had been sitting.

Here is right after I got it together enough for it to move. It still needed everything buttoned up and tuned.

1984 D100 First Time Moving Under Its Own Power - YouTube

I have since got it able to be driven and have been slowly fixing all the little issues that pop up with a vehicle that has sat for years.

I took it to the Pigeon Forge Rod Runs and wrapped my springs up and broke the yoke on my 8 3/4 rear end. It took me a month to get that fixed only to realize I messed my gearset up when I changed the yoke so I am currently in the proccess of pulling the 3.23 open gear that i didnt really want anyway and installing a 4.56 with a locker.

Sounds great! Motor looks very nice.

Are you going to make a low mean street truck out of it?

Yeah pretty much. Its lowered in the front when I can I am doing a axle flip in the back to get it to set like I want it. I want some rake but not what it has right now.

Here is what she looks like right now other than the hood and bumper are back on it. I gotta either modify my radiator support or find a 92-93 one if I decide to keep this grill.

Look into CalTracs or similar if you're doing an axle under.
You'll get a lot of axle wrap (my experience with a basically stock 5.2)

I like the 92+ Grill.

should have kept it fuel injected. you loose so much power going with carb. i know if i had the money or parts kicking around i would fuel inject my 81 just like my 93. my 93 is very fun to drive when it is working properly. the 81 is nice to drive but it would be even nice if i had a fuel injected engine that was putting out an extra 100hp

I disagree a properly sized and tuned carb will make just as much if not more than the factory fuel injection. Now if I had the extra three grand or so for a big bore throttle body bigger injectors and megasquirt then yes fuel injection is better.

Carb does add "cool factor". Not only that, but you get that awesome, cold idle lope under 55*. :D

the dyno sheets would disagree with you. you don't need to spend $3000 to go fuel injected and upgrade the throttle body/injectors. could have used the van wiring harness and computer to run the engine. you can get a 50mm throttle body and better injectors for less than $300.
