I have a 2014 RAM 1500 Hemi - chime sounded, fuel sensor flashed and gas gauge went to empty. Immediately drove to gas station and filled it up (only took 9 gallons). Checked engine oil and it's good. Looked everywhere under the hood and truck and no visible leaks. Started truck, only the check engine light remains on. The Truck runs fine. Any ideas?

Same thing happened to my 2014 Sport with 44M miles on it. Long story short, it needed a new fuel sensor/pump.

Thanks for the reply. Damn, that sucks. Does that involve dropping the fuel tank? How much was that repair?

Before you start chasing parts, get the codes read. Most auto parts stores do it for free.

Get the code, the parts store can clear it for you and then list the code here. We can help you diagnose the issue from there.

In some cases they are momentary codes that never come back after 3 key cycles. Other times, they are hard codes that will light up each time you start the truck whether you cleared it or not.

Maddog is right. Definitely get codes pulled before changing anything.

Since your gauge went to empty, it is probably the sender. I've seen this many times on here, so it's not uncommon. I think there might even have been a TSB on this. If that is the case, yes, it is within the fuel pump module and you'll have to drop the tank and change the whole module.

Here is another thread on this exact problem:

Thanks, Maddog and Rampant. I'll get the code from a third party source (Dealership is backed up). Wow, thanks for the link too, Rampant. It does appear to be a trend with 2014 1500 Hemi's. My mileage is at only 41,000 miles too.

Hi LTC_GBH,

We see that at this time you are just reaching out to other forum members for advice. However, if you do choose to visit the dealer to have this looked into further, we would be more than happy to offer our assistance. Please feel free to send us a private message with additional details.

It turns out to be a PO463 code. The CEL went off for a couple days but then today the chime sounded, fuel empty light came on and the gas gauge went to empty but the truck ran fine (this happened three times on the way to the shop).

I wonder whether or not that falls under your 5 yr/ 100K powertrain warranty.

The problem was with a "fuel level 1 sensor." The part replaced was a fuel sensor "module LE" (68141873-AA / 14072009) and the price for the part was $163 at the dealership. Labor at the dealership was $417 (they had to drop the tank). This repair did not fall under the power train warranty. It's still a great truck.

very common problem, there is a thread here about it happening on many rams, mostly 2014 rams, my 2014 had that happen at like 17k miles, you have to replace the fuel pump unit and yep that means a tank drop, dealer did mine under warranty, and the new owner of my 14 showed me a week ago that the same thing happened, im not sure what they did wrong for the fuel pumps in 2014 but they really screwed the pooch on that one...

my advice if you have a warranty still, then go to the dealer, if not, well you have an expensive repair ahead

Before I went running to the dealer I'd try a bottle of techron gas treatment, if you have a big tank you'll need the qt bottle. On the qt bottle it says "cleans sensors" and also gives mixing ratio, if I remember right it's 1oz per gallon.

RAMnewbie, I tried that too but it didn't help. My truck ran great before and during this problem. I could have ignored it but I hated the chime and loss of the fuel gauge. After a few minutes, everything would reset except the CEL would stay on.

Just a question, you guys that are having trouble with you're fuel sensors are you running primarily or exclusive shell gas? I know a year or so ago shell had a problem around here that was causing alot of fuel pump/ sensor problems, and it wasn't only in Rams, a variety of vehicles. I think they said it was too much sulfur. I use some shell but mostly BP.

Nope, i never run shell gas, i had it screw up a 3rd gen of mine, and i only ran premium gas in mine from new gas stations, as well as my truck never went below half a tank

Fuel treatment doesnt fix a sensor
