Hello. . New to the forum. 1st time ownng a Ram pick up. Looking forward to lots of helpful tips as the years go by. I'm sure you will help me stay out of the shop. Thanks, in advance!

Can you guys tell me where I stand? Is this a class 4? Can I just add a receiver? How much do you think the drill holes hurt me? (Just got it home to Illinois and has fresh undercoat)

The ball has a 1" shank and there's a 3/4" hole 4" on either side.

The factory style class 3 hitch from Curt attaches to where the ball is and two holes on the cross member behind. Rated for 600 pound tongue weight, 1000 with WDH. Should cost you less than $100. I would go that route.

If you need more than 1000 you probably need a 3/4 ton, but there is a Class 4 hitch from Curt as well. Traditional frame rail attached hitch rated for 1500 pounds tongue weight.

I ordered the class 3 receiver that has a bolt coming down thru the hole where th ball is presently an cpl bolts you fish into place from the back.

Looking at the class 4. Does that mount to the frame over the existing factory hitch? Or wld I plan to drop off the bumper and thn the existing hitch, too.

As it stands. If I add this receiver I think I can mostly stay below the 600/6000. For the cpl times a year where I wld be around the 10K mark I would borrow a bigger truck. .

Thank you for the input. Much appreciated.

I haven’t installed the class 4, but my assumption is it only adds to the truck, since the crossmember behind the bumper that the class three bolts onto is part of the crash tested OEM structure.

Class 4 Hitch Receiver is what Ram installed as part of the original build.

Dealerships seem to choose the Class 3 Hitch Receiver
It is up to you, but i would not pull a car across town with a class 3

Class 4 does not depend on the rear bumper at all
