is it worth fixing or get a crate motor?
Not looking to buy a new truck, dont want long term payments.
Jasper crate motor has a 3 yr, 100,000 mile warranty.
parts , labor, new everything including pulling dash to replace heater core is 6850 out the door.
Thoughts please.

Sounds like a reasonable fix to me. The problem with a rebuild is that many of the ancillary parts are reused and something there may have actually caused the heat problem to start with. New is generally better....

I say just replace the heads because that’s the main problem with the 4.7 junk motors. I wouldn’t mess with the heater core unless it’s leaking.
There’s nothing wrong with that short block.
Water pump, heads,180 T stat, radiator hoses, heater hoses. That should cover everything that needs replacing to get it back on the road.
And don’t forget to clock the T stat. That’s very important to do.

The 4.7 is known for weak heads. And factory used the wrong temperature Tsats also.
IMHO

A year later lol...thermostat has a bleed hole in it, this HAS to be oriented up or it won't ever bleed air out of the system properly. Overheat a 4.7, only a matter of time before you kiss it good bye.

The first generation 4.7s are the ones with all the issues. Those engines were junk, and just worked as boat anchors with a few bits that move (or for the heads, eject). The second gen 4.7s are a completely different story and are INCREDIBLY reliable when they’re taken care of. I can vouch as mine hasn’t had any issues in 461K of driving over 8 years.
