Nice writeup.

Sounds about right. I'm getting 17.5/21.5 mpg consistently on my 2013 1500 CC 4x4 v6/8spd/3.21 (33k miles). 2wd and reg cab will go higher.

This is about exactly where I am on my 17 with the same config but the hemi. 16.5-17.3 in the city and 20-21.5 hwy. I think my city driving I'm pretty easy on the throttle since it's stop and go. On the highway I just stay around 65-70.

You must have thoroughly enjoyed the power because 14 mpg with 70% highway is horrible. I get 16 with 90% city and my average drive is like 2 miles so the engine isn't even warm giving even worse mileage.

when I go on the highway it bumps up to 18-22 with the Hemi. On my way back from my parents cabin this weekend (70 miles) I probably averaged like 25 but its slightly down hill most of the way.

Either way I love it because I'm coming from a 6inch lifted 5.3 Silverado with 35's, 20's, and 4.56's that I got like 12 city and 12 highway.

That's a great point I should try to see if I can find a pentastar v6 Ram to drive so I can complete this review with all the available engines for our 1500's.

Hmmm...getting my bilsteins installed tomorrow and going to be renting a car for the day... maybe I can see if enterprise has a Ram 1500 V6 gasser

Bilsteins! Good choice, they should come stock in all the 1500s.

My 1500 Hemi gets 17+ all day long in the city and easily sees 21 on the open road at 70 or thereabouts.
If I get a heavy right foot it goes down pretty fast, But I'm not as lead footed as I once was.

Not surprised at all that you were impressed by the 5.7L power and performance. You had to have enjoyed that aspect of the truck to get such crappy mileage. I have 23,000 miles on mine and get an average of 21-22 MPG.

As good as the 5.7L is, the 6.4L is a quantum leap above and beyond. The 6.4L in my Charger Scat Pack will knock your socks off.

I am in Mopar Heaven and love my Hemi's.

Traded my 15 Pentastar for my current truck. I loved that engine but at the end of the day the difference in fuel milage is minimum.

Agree here completely.
From your description of the spirited driving with the hemi, yeah, you are driving it hard. Expect bad mileage. I drive mine easy and get 17-18 town, 19-21 hwy.
Here is something people often miss. For best performance, the Hemi needs high octane fuel. 87 octane will cause it to dial back the total timing and that cost you power, which cost mileage.

So I went to grab a rental car for the day while my Bilstein and fox shocks were being installed and my choice for midsize sedans was between a Nissan Altima and a black 5.7 HEMI Dodge Charger...

What an absurdly fast car for it being one of the bottom rung trim levels (it was an RT). I mean for 30 grand and having 4 doors that car is mean as hell. It felt like it had almost too much power. It's all probably relative though since I've been driving a truck for the past year. I'm sure once you get used to one of those you're probably wanting the SRT-8's power.. What a blast though, those 5.7's are really something!

I can attest to the want for more from a 5.7 Charger as I recently got rid of my '15. In the beginning it feels like its all youd need, but as time goes by, that 6.4L SRT calls your name..and you cant ignore it. It is easy to lose the love for your engine when theres a 6.4L hemi and a 6.2L supercharged out there. I definitely notice a difference in the same engine from car to truck in terms of not being as fast off the line but that's to be expected. The truck still carries 25 more HP and has a 15MPH higher top speed. The thing I like about trucks is there aren't usually many people who judge the truck by the speed of it. With my Charger I got into so many highway races it wasn't funny. With the truck no one cares, and if need be I can take over lanes, so I guess that's a plus haha.

nice detailed write up, I am guessing most Hemi owners are heavy on the gas pedal I am not. I have seen as many as 600 miles on the R/T once filling up is completed. It's funny but at 55-60 mph the Hemi will return at a minimum 22 mpgs. It infuriates my wife to no end when I travel at the speeds I do but keep in mind I always stay in the slow lane so people have no trouble getting past me.

Hey Tank, you may drive like a Grandpa but looking at your mods it looks like you should be driving more like Ricky Racer LOL! :burnout:

nice write up.

I've got a diesel Jetta I used to drive all the time fpr work. Not spirited at all just like you say. I used to ask myself why I continued to drive it ...but was reminded every time I filled up the tank (40+ mpg).
