Hi all, first post, first Dodge Ram. 2001 1500 SLT 4x4 automatic with a short box and a 318.

Got the truck real cheap (which is good because I'm real poor). The pulley on the alternator seems to be seized. I yanked an alternator out of a '96 parts truck (318ci) last week, but the numbers are different than the one on mine.

The parts truck alternator part# is 53008651
My truck's alternator part# is 56028920AA

Will they interchange? It looks like it'll bolt up, I just don't know if it'll work or not, and I don't need to go causing an electrical problem that I won't be able to afford to fix. It would be great to find out that this alternator would just plug and play.

I wanna say they're plug and play. The PNs might be different simply because they are a different year, or it could be that they're a different amperage.

So dodge dude, if they're different amperages, would that screw anything up with my truck?

Shouldn't. These trucks came with 112 and 136 amp alternators most commonly.

Why two different amperages? Was that a year-to-year update kind of thing? Or did some trucks require more amps for something? The part# of the alternator that is on my truck, I think, is a 136 amp alternator, and the one I pulled is a 120 amp. If I put the low-amperage alternator in, will something starve or get fried/ruined?

It was not a year to year thing, there was a 90, 112 and 136 amp alternators. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the more heavily optioned trucks got the 136 amp alt.s simply because of all the power doohickeys they had compared to the more bare bones trucks. Trucks with the service package also had the higher amp alts. Unless you're going to be running a lot of juice out of your battery on a regular basis (read, plow, winch, or stereo usage) the 120amp should be fine.

If it bolts up, plugs in, and lines up for the serpentine, it will work. The only variable left is amperage as DD94 has said.
Welcome to the forum :)

Rock and roll, thanks guys! Now where do I buy the cheapest possible replacement rocker panels? I need inners and outers on both sides.

NOPE. The alternator off the '96 doesn't work on the 2001. Body is different and so are the connectors. My luck.:shakehead:

Well, at least you don't have to worry about nuking anything. :D

Might try a 98+ truck.

Sourced one at a local junk yard, $50. In other news, I have an alternator for a '96 ready to go if anyone needs one!

Sell it back to the junkyard? :D

Lol, can't, got it out of some guy's parts truck on the side of the road :doh2:

On the upside, I paid $175 for 5 good tires on matching alloys, a good caliper, a new serpentine belt, and the alternator. So all things considered, I still did ok. I just need to find someone to buy the alternator to fund the purchase of the correct one for $50 at a local junkyard and I'll be g2g.

Whoops, yeah, that complicates things just a tad, but you did well on the other stuff though. As far as a quick sale, i wish you luck. lol

Well I would say buy a new/reman alt and drop the other as the core. Good find on the tires.
