Hi,
I'll be buying my first truck ever in a few months and I've decided on the Ram Ecodiesel. I'm not sure if I should go with the 3.92 or 3.55 axle ratio. My wife and I are teachers so we have the summers off which is when we'll do most of our distance traveling. Most of the year we'll be towing a 28ft. pontoon on the weekends. We'll also end up buying a small travel trailer that will weigh at most 5K dry. What would you recommend, 3.92 or 3.55? We live in south TX btw. Thanks!

I would venture that 3.55 would get by, but would yield very little in real world mileage gains over 3.92. So... my vote is 3.92.

I second this vote. If you're going to tow with it, allow it to tow, don't "cut it off at the knees" by chopping capacity.

Go 3.92. It'll be easier on the truck in the long run. Takes less effort to turn the wheels with a 3.92 over a 3.55

I have 3.55 and wish i would have looked into it before I bought. The 3.92 with Limited slip diff is the best.

I have 3.55 with the open diff, it does just fine hauling my 26' TT but wish I had the little extra on the hill starts. Gas savings are minimal at best.

So would gas savings negate the price of upgrading to 3.92 or even 4.10 ( I have larger tires) gears for a 4x4?

I've heard it costs a lot to change these 2013s gears but I Don't actually know how much.

You will probably never regret having too low of gear (higher number) you will regret too high of a gear. Go jump on a mountain bike and try and get through the mud in too high of gear and you will struggle. Lower gear setting and bam you power right through that. Now ideally you get the perfect balance and the beauty is you will have an amazing transmission to guide you. 3.92 was great with 5 speed auto it has to be really great with 8 speed.
