When my daughter was in an infant seat, I just used the center belt and it was VERY secure... so secure it put divots in the cushion foam that took a couple weeks to disappear when it was removed. But there was no way a rear facing infant seat would fit behind the driver's seat.

I have a forward facing child seat on the driver's side now using the latch system. It's kind of a wierd routing to make it work, but it's very secure too. The owners manual helps with routing the belts.

At least with my experience while shopping for cars, only the foreign makes put teh latch system in the middle seat. My wife's Saturn Outlook doesn't have them in the middle seats either.

You have latch. They have been federally mandated for years. You're just not digging deep enough. My 04 had them as well as my 07. Like I said, it's mandated, not optional.

If you want to place the seat in the middle why not just use the inner latch point from either side?

I would however my fire gear resides on the small side and when you flip the seat up the latch disappears

You're not supposed to use the inner latch from the side seats to latch the kid seat in the middle position. The distance between them exceeds the recommended gap... at least that's how I read it for the three seats I have (Graco and Evenflow).

I guess I should have said the lower latch points don't seem to be present in the domestic makes. My Ram and Saturn have the upper anchor in the middle position, just not the lower ones. So you still have to use the seat belt for the middle position.

When we switch to a front facing the sides will be fine...but with the rear facing there is no way it will fit behind a seat...Might have to invest in a 4th gen or mega cab...Gotta tell the woman...

come up and see my 4th gen. I'd recommend a crew cab if you don't mind a 5 foot bed
