My son drives a 2004 Ram 2500 with a 6 speed. A month ago he installed a reman transmission by himself using a transmission jack. He’s a good mechanic and he knows his truck. Friday he had a lockup at 60 mph. Got the truck home, transmission removed and found 2/3 of one side of the pressure plate was missing, ground up and scattered throughout the bell housing. We vacuumed that out, got an Autozone clutch kit and put it in. The flywheel looked very good, so we decided to leave it. Looking back, this might have been a mistake. With everything back together, the transmission will not shift into any gear with the engine running. With the engine stopped, we can put it in any gear, press the clutch, and start the truck. initially the clutch felt spongy, but we added some fluid and it firmed up and seems to be normal. We can’t open and inspect it till next weekend, when we plan on pulling the flywheel in order to inspect everything behind it. I am the 75 year old dad in this story, and I would sincerely appreciate any advice from truckers who know this transmission. Thank you for your consideration.

With it not going into gear while running, it's not a flywheel issue. I would reexamine the throw out bearing, Master/***** cylinder and the pressure plate.
