So yesterday I purchased 4 new tires (Toyo Open Country R/T Trail) in 315/70/17. They will be in on Friday for install. My concern is, looking at the specs again, they are Load Range D2, Load index 121 and it states on Discount Tire website that the max PSI is 50. So, I'm concerned if these will be good/safe tires to run and what PSI to keep them at if I do proceed with the install? I do have a 2016 Power Wagon. From what I read, the 121 Index should give me a total of around 12,788 lb. load capacity. I also don't understand what the load range D2 means. Just looking for any insight from someone else with more eperience. Thanks ya'll.

The only issue is they will cause the TPMS (tire pressure system) to throw a warning on the dash, unless you have the system reprogrammed. That is because the system will be looking for a higher tire pressure. Most tire stores will "flag" this condition if you try to by certain tires for a particular model.
Other than that there are no "safety" concerns. The max weight rating for the Power Wagon is only around 8,500 lbs. and as stated the tires can support over 12,000 lbs. I have E rated tires rated up to 65 PSI and run them at 45 front and 40 rear.

Don’t trust tire dealer websites to provide accurate specifications. Lots of errors I’ve seen. I always use the tire manufacturer’s website.

Power Wagon OEM tires are load range D. D will give a smoother ride than E, although many PW drivers will opt for E rated replacement tires. Either because of durability or availability.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. Makes me feel safer about putting them on now. I will definitely get the truck reprogrammed somehow to account for the new size and tire pressure. Speaking of PSI, I'm assuming the shop will know what PSI to set them at but just in case they're off, what PSI would anyone recommend I put these tires at? Reminder, I will not be towing anything unless it's a few groceries honestly LOL. Thanks again.

45 front and 40 rear. Thats what I found to be the best psi for me. The shop will max them out more than likely unless you tell them other wise. Hopefully they dont go off of the door jam placard which will be in the 60 psi range.

I double-checked the Toyo website and the numbers look the same as stated above. Do agree with your statement and have seen incorrect information before, so why I decided to look on the manufacturers website.

I run 40psi front and rear (cold adjusted) with my Load Range E 10-ply Michelin Defender LTX M/S.

Perfect wear across the entire face, smooth and comfy ride, too.

I rotate every third oil change, so, 10,000 miles they go front to back first, then next rotation they get crossed with front to back.

I have these tires (although 35x12.5/17) on my ‘16 power wagon. I run high 50’s in the front and high 40’s in the back, unless im towing heavy them air up the rears a bit.

You may want to google the “chalk line test”! It will help you find the best pressures for each tire to get the best wear characteristics!

Pressures are subjective to loads!

I run max when towing my camper! F60/R65!

45 all around when just driving! I have a decked drawer system and tools and recovery equip in the bed!

If things “feel” a little “soft”, I’ll air up a little!

Different people will run different pressures for different situations!

I do get lazy here and there! Right now I’m at 60/65…I towed my camper WEEKS ago! At those pressures I feel every exp joint and grooves in the road!

I’m having new tires mounted now!!!
45 all around! I’ll feel it out as I drive on them!

So if it says the max PSI is 50, does that mean I should be fine with say 45 front and 40 rear? I'll rarely haul anything with much weight in the bed if rarely.
GET away from the MAX number. That is MAX pressure cold, max load. U have a bit more truck than me (1500), 40-45 same all around be fine. All depends upon how stiff, or soft ride. U could cheat and run em about 42 ish, and U be fine,. Just air up when cold, not 95 out, and not after U have traveled 10 miles to an air pump if U do not have a Compressor and a reliable digital gauge.

Great to know, that's so much for that. Yeah, I keep looking at that max number so I'll try to not get too caught up in it. Thanks again man.

My new tires are a similar size to yours. Start off with 40-45 as suggested but if the ride sucks then keep dropping them down. I got down to 30 before mine rode well.
Ok good to know, I'll see what she feels like as soon as she rolls off the lift Friday morning. I'm excited to see what she looks like with her new shoes. She currently has on some Toyo Geolander M/T G003 in 285/75/17. I like em but wanted something just a little bigger. So we shall see. And I don't know why I said "SHE" so much lol.

Thanks for that. I've seen some YT videos on the Chalk Test and will definitely use that a guide as well.

yea you could start there and then see what its like. You shouldnt need max psi most of the time.

My 35x12.5’s are load range e with a max psi of 65. Seems weird the 315’s are load d and 50 psi max when its basically the same size tire.
