Hello
Anybody have any insight as to why my crankshaft position sensor failed/continues to fail?
Best way to test the wiring harness by myself?
I just got a BRAND new hemi installed
5.7 working great 2 weeks in

Cps fails throws a code
Ok i get a new one simple enough . i get a new one. Put it on truck starts up. Runs great light goes off no more codes
3/4 of the day in cps throws a code again truck limps home ( top speed 15 mph wahoo!)
Get it home get new sensor
Doublecheck that the connecter is tight on dosent work
However it will start and run but it takes a minute.

Any advice on how/what/where to start?
Yes i have tools just wanted to get advice on the trouble shooting
2006 dodge ram 5.7 hemi 2 wheel drive
Thanks for your help
I just got it painted as well and new headlights will install new carpet soon and will def check out those bed lights3789adf8a1d54bb148bc68e4f0c7fc6f.jpg

I hope someone can answer this as I am having problems with mine also. The first 2 times it went out I was a long way from home and had to have it towed to a shop. Third time I was close to home and put it in myself. I now have it at a shop I trust in hopes they can find the problem. I'm thinking it has to be in the wiring somewhere. If I find the answer I'll let you know. I hope you will do the same.

Did you change the crank and camshaft position sensors at the same time?

Does the sensor have any physical damage to it. Scuffed on the end?

Ok
So i changed the camshaft sensor...
Not an easy task for a big guy
Did it from underneath thank you great grandpa for leaving that big ole wrench to me[emoji16]
I used an open ended wrench
I dont have long enough sockets
Before i did this i pulled the codes and it said "crankshaft" sensor
( i already changed it out earlier and it worked for an hour)
So after changing the camshaft sensor( freaking hands are to big!) 1/4 turn at a time... I started the truck and it runs great!! Ill return the other crank sensor ( hey 20 bucks is 20 bucks!)
I think some old school ppl will complain about these engine mngmt sensors ..im old im not complaining it makes for easier diagnostics

did this solve the problem? my crank sensor keeps blowing and I'm getting tired of replacing it. I installed one a year and a half ago. then one in January this year, then again in March. again in May, now 2 weeks ago and it blew again today August 13.

its way too aggravating to keep doing and even though I need a work truck, I may ditch this one or trade it in if I can't keep a crank sensor in it.

thx,

RR

I have had poor results using electrical replacement sensors from my local auto parts store. Everyone has failed from O2s to CKP/CMP. I have had better luck using sensors I have laying around from core motors. Dealership is my next choice. Rockauto usually has a selection to choose from. Good luck..

You should replace crank and cam sensor at the same time.

Ditto on that just from my experience. One of my sensors (don't remember which one went first) went out on my old '01 1500 5.9L. The mechanic told me that when the camshaft/crankshaft sensor goes out, it will take the other one with it. I don't know enough about it to know whether he was telling the truth or just trying to get more money out of me. He replaced both, and I had no more problems.

@rrb6699, did you get a CEL to make you replace yours? I'm curious if there was a code for both sensors.
