I was looking for a solution to add subs to my truck. There are some good options out there like the one from JL audio but I wasn't so sure about the price of their premade units. I decided to give a DIY sub build a shot and it worked out great! It even has Bluetooth 5.0! Below I'm going to give a break down of the parts I used and the total cost of the project. Enjoy!
I bought a Triton Audio EL102P dual 10" subwoofer in new condition on Craigslist for $70. I should be able to get $50 for the empty cabinet so I'm chalking that up as $20 for both drivers.
Next I chose to buy a Skar Audio enclosure which cost me $252.
After some research I bought a Dayton Audio KAB-2150 amplifier which outputs 150W x 2 (300W total) at 4 ohm. A perfect match for the Triton subs. And again it has Bluetooth 5.0 for easy wireless control!
That amplifier requires this power supply for full power. I also like to do in-line low pass filters when I do custom subwoofers. Lastly just to make things easy on me if I have to take the drivers out I bought a couple of jumper wires to go between the filters and speakers. All these parts cost me $122 with a coupon.
Building it was pretty straight forward, I used one of the brackets normally meant for the speaker hook ups to house the volume control, Bluetooth reset switch and power indicator LED. I used some double sided adhesive tape to stick the power supply, amp and filters to the bottom of the enclosure. Everything is contained inside the cabinet for a clean look, the only thing sticking out is the power cord so I can hook it up to a portable battery.
Build time was about 5 hours and total cost for this was $373! That is a massive savings compared to the cost of the pre-made systems I mentioned earlier. Not to mention the convenience of having Bluetooth so I don't have to run wiring for the amplifier to the head unit and battery.
