I have a 2013 Ram 2500 Diesel Big Horn that's throwing a P2200 code for the Exhaust system. The Pyrometer has been replaced twice and a new Oxygen sensor as well. So far neither the dealer nor a private ASC certified Diesel mechanic can properly diagnose and repair. I've been to several dealers with no luck and now with a well-known and respected diesel repair shop and none can figure out why the check engine light keeps going on and staying on.

Here's the rest of the info. I DO NOT have any programmers on the truck. I do have these Banks components on the truck. Peddle Monster, Super Gage, Cold Air Intake and Banks larger intercooler. I also have an ATS Aurora Turbo which is supposed to be a simple stock replacement. These components have been on the truck for about 6 or more months before the check engine code ever showed up.

Obviously, the dealer throws up their hands and says it's the fault of the aftermarket components. But why then would it take 6 months and many miles for the error code to show up. The independent mechanic shop has gone through harness checks and found nothing wrong. They have also checked all connectors for any faults as well as made sure the CPM has the most current software update and revisions.

I'm at a loss for what to do now as I've already spent more than $4000 dollars on replacement sensors and diagnosis services.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Was the NOx sensor checked? Inlet/outlet side?

What causes the P2200 code?

More often than not, the P2200 code is caused by a failed catalytic converter. In some cases, a failed O2 sensor can be a possibility, but usually an O2 sensor-related code will accompany a catalytic converter code. Catalytic converters are designed to last the entire life cycle of the vehicle – meaning that a catalytic converter failure is due to another problem, such as:

  • A rich-running condition (possibly due to a faulty coolant temp sensor)
  • Failed mass air flow sensor
  • Failed manifold air pressure sensor
  • Failed fuel pressure regulator or other fuel injection component
  • Ignition misfire
  • Oil fouling
  • ******** spark timing
Bear in mind that a leaky exhaust manifold, down pipe, flex hose or several other exhaust components mounted upstream from the catalytic converter can also mimic the symptoms of catalytic converter failure and register a code in the PCM.

What are the symptoms of the P2200 code?

Symptoms of a P2200 code can include:

  • Illuminated MIL indicator
  • Hesitation
  • Lack of power
  • Hissing noise while accelerating
  • Engine stalling
  • No-start condition
Maybe start checking your connections and anything else that could affect the sensors....

I should have also said that so far the Pyrometer has been replaced twice, but with no effect as once the code was cleared a hundred miles or so later it came back on. The Oxygen sensor has also been replaced and the same result took place. Now the P2201 code is showing which didn't show before and so that's going to be dealt with this Friday. But I'm still not sure about that fixing my ongoing problem. The group I have doing the work is a Diesel specialist group and they've been pulling their hair out trying to determine the root cause. No exhaust leaks, no power loss, no reduction in fuel mileage. Other thana the lights and codes the truck runs perfectly.
