Hey fellas. Got a couple pics of the gear tooth wear in my 9.25. I was curious what you guys thought. Last winter I did my first ring and pinion. I installed nitro 4.10 gears along with all new bearings. As much as I thought I did everything correctly I’m assuming I set them up wrong. I gathered some opinions and reset them a couple times before hitting the 50 mile mark. I’m still having a problem with my rear diff making a humming noise when I get to 70mph accelerating then goes away when I get into the 80mph range. With conflicting opinions I decided to run it and I have currently put over 3000 miles on it and the noise hasn’t gotten any worse or better.
I’m interested if anyone can tell what I may have done wrong when I set these gears or that they are just noisy gears. I’m mostly wanting to know for when I install another set of gears someday.

The pattern looks a bit shallow for my liking. I would like to see the wear pattern a bit deeper. I.E. closer to the root of ring gear teeth.

Okay so I would have to shim my pinion a bit deeper?

the only thing he did not show, was to use the yellow spray, that would show the wear pattern

If you go to the Randy's Ring & pinion site
they tell you that with some brands, like Yukon Gear
they sell a quiet set & a slightly noisier set.

The Yukon site does not mention that

I did take quite a few patterns down when I was setting the gears up and the pattern looked good as far as I could tell but I am very new at setting differentials. I’ll attach some pics of the last pattern I took last winter. What do you guys think I’m in for if I keep running it like this?

To me, the pattern looks pretty good, but i have never worked with differential, just watched several videos

That pattern looks pretty decent.
What's the play between the ring and pinion at every 90 degrees for a full 360 degrees?
What gear oil and weight?

Might end up just being a hummer at that speed for quiet a while.
Only at 70 mph? Not at 60 mph?

Does it go away at 70 mph when coasting?

To make the gear mesh deeper would be moving shims to the carrier side which would push the carrier into the pinion more. Moving the pinion shins would make the gear mesh off center. I’ve never done a diff but that’s very well centered into the teeth but I agree looks like you could make it slightly deeper based on research I’ve done prior.

My backlash at various spots it’s right around .008”. It can be heard very faintly in the 60mph range. It’s a louder pickup so I’m not stressing about the noise too much but my curiosity is killing me. The humming noise goes go away when coasting at those noisy speeds. Originally I was using Amsoil 80w90 but I changed it out yesterday to take a look at it and take pictures. It’s got valvoline 75w140 in it now. The change in oil didn’t make much of a difference.

Things like pinion depth, bearing preload, backlash readings.... all germane and important for a successful rebuild, would be helpful! Those patterns are an incomplete aspect of the entire process!
