So I believe I have a case of the tick! I was told to not use mobile one and add lucas oil on my next Change. What oil should I use and what weight? I purchased a k&N gold oil filter so far. I want this noise gone!

I've read on the forum that Mobil 1 is not currently certified to meet the Chrysler MS-6395 standard. I haven't dug into it so I have no idea what all that entails. I still plan on running Mobil 1 in mine when it rolls 10k miles.

New I think iv only had the truck for 3 weeks. I may not have noticed it. If I tap the gas it goes away even if it's just a little.

If it was a lifter when I applied throttle I would assume it would get faster and louder.

When you have a 03 you need to be aware of valve spring failures. Not all trucks will have a failure, but enough to upgrade when given an opportunity. If a 03/04 starts ticking then the first thing I'd do is pull the valve covers and inspect the springs. #6 cyl seems to be the one that most often fails for whatever reason. Good luck..

When I purchased my truck last December, it had Castrol GTX 10W30 oil, and it had the tick on startup, but it went away as soon as the engine reached normal operating temperature. I replaced the oil and filter with Mobil 1 5W20 Synthetic oil, and Mobil 1 Extended Performance M1-204 oil filter. The tick is now gone, engine runs very smooth from startup to wide open throttle, and idles very quietly.

I do think that mobil 1 0w40 euro spec is great oil and the EP line is very good as well but im currently on the pennzoil bandwagon for over-the-counter oils. Im currently running the platinum pure plus and cant wait to do a used oil analysis (UOA)

I would say pennzoil (sopus) is making as good if not better oil than mobil at this time. Its a shame they are having so much trouble distributing them in canada. When i go to the walmarts here they have the platinum but no ultra. Same deal at canadian tire. Napa has quarts of ultra but over 10$ per quart. When the platinum goes on sale its like 30 bucks for 5 litres so thats when i grab it.

Your Ram year says '03.;)

I have an '06 and have always had a very pronounced tic using Valvoline standard 5W-20 before and after my rebuild. I was thinking about going with synthetic on my next oil change. If you have MDS then you need to stick with 5W-20.

Got rid of my tick last week on my 03. 11 of my 16 push rods had worn oblong ends at the valve rails so i replaced all 4 rails and 16 pushrods. I have known that the rods have been wearing like that since about 130k miles and at 165k mikes i got around to correcting the issue during cam swap no.5. Last fall i replaced all the valve springs to 6.1 with buckets intact when i had to go in and replace all the valve seals. Some Cam set-ups are tickier than others. My Spartan Cammed Hemi with milled Inertia Heads is very noisey in the valve train. My truck slways had a tick until recently so we will see how it goes. I know a guy with an 04 stock set-up which is the quiet-ist Hemi i have ever heard so its hit and miss. Said Hemi tick should only be heard at idle otherwise you have exhaust leakage which would also throw a cell like a P0420 for example. Danny

Not true. Im running 5w30 pennzoil platinum and the mds never skips a beat. Same as when it was on 5w20 and the same as other rams ive driven. Ran 5w30 last summer (valvoline synpower) then 5w20 this last winter (pennzoil platinum) and now pennzoil platinum pure plus 5w30 and my engine has never sounded better. Sounded like a sewing machine with the valvoline.
Shame cause they make great oil but not for my hemi.

Probably going to try and get some PP 0w30 for this winter, if they dont make it or i cant find it ill blend 0w20 and 5w30 haha

If i was running dino oil i would stick to the recommended viscosity and oil change interval. :)

I have a muffler delete so i can hear it kick in and out. After you get used to it you can feel it kick in without hearing it but you have to be paying attention. Definatly helps to remove that bus muffler. Sounds like an underwater helicopter, or a strange subaru, when its in mds

Greg, Used the 6.1 push-rods as that is what others have been running successfully with the 260 Cam. IMO if you have MDS lifters in your engine regardless of wether they are active or in the case of my other motor turned off via the tune (LX motor 2) and like the new 6.4 engine am running 0w30 in the form of shell rotella synthetic. I have heard that 5w30 over time may gum up the lifters but that is just street talk i've heard so it could be truth or myth. I had success using the Redline Synthetic to quiet the lifters and it worked better than the Royal P stuff but it wasn't till I installed longer custom exhsust rods that it became quieter but then again it was cammed with MDS surge tuned out by Inertia (Spare MDS motor 3). I say myth. Wether you run 0w20 or 0w30 or 5w20 or 5w30 nothing is going to gum up the lifters other than using poor quality oil or letting it varnish by never doing oil changes.
Futhermore redline 5w20 which lots of people on here run, has the viscosity of a light 5w30 and ive never seen one report of damaged or non functioning mds system. If my motor had vvt i would be more inclined to use the reccomended viscosity.
The fact that 5w30 was reccomended for the hemi pre-mds leads me to believe that the motor was designed for 5w30 in the beginning and the switch to 5w20 in 2006 along with the arrival of mds was to help the CAFE (corprate average fuel economy) ratings.
