I'm getting close to ordering an Isata 5 30FW RV built on the RAM 5500 4x4 Chassis Cab. Here is the RV for reference: http://www.dynamaxcorp.com/product-details.aspx?LineID=329
To be clear, I don't intend any 'extreme' off-roading in the thing, I know it's not a rock crawler. However, I'm down-sizing from a 40' diesel pusher with a stacker trailer behind it, and want to get a little further off the beaten path than I can now with the piece-of-mind of having 4wd if I need it.
This is what the coach will look like:
There is a long wait for these right now because of a lack of supply of the 5500 4x4 Chassis Cab, I imagine this is because RAM is making the switch to the 2019 from the 2018. By the time I get my order in and it gets built I suspect I'll be on the 2019 platform, in fact I'll probably wait to make sure I am.
So, what are my options for a minor lift? I want a little more clearance (especially for the rear over-hang) and I'd like to fit a little more tire.
This is the tire I'd like to run: https://simpletire.com/toyo-285-70r...I5RMVszWeQL9EADjLq29Owa9mUTnGlpBoCy_IQAvD_BwE
It measures out at 35x11" vs. the stock 32x9" tires on the RV. It seems like I might even be able to clear that up front without any lift. However, the rear is what I'm more concerned about. With the wider tires I suspect I might have to run a spacer between the dually wheels to provide the necessary gap between the tires, which would make the outer tire pretty close to the body. It looks like the inner lip of the wheel well wouldn't be too hard to trim though. Still, I'd like to bring the back up a little to make clearance less of an issue for the tires, but also to get the rear overhang a little higher.
What options are there for a SMALL lift for the 5500? I looked into Kelderman, and unfortunately it sounds like their full 4-link air bag rear suspension won't work on the RV application (space interference with the added "RV stuff"). However, their front suspension setup with the "built in" leveling geometry looks promising: https://kelderman.com/shop/2016-ram-4500-5500-2-stage-front-air-suspension
In the rear, I was considering just adding a few leafs to the spring pack to achieve 1-2" of lift. Any thoughts, or better options?
Thanks,
TJ
