The power and mileage effects should be 'felt' immediately with the new gears.

That being said, I would NOT get on the gears hard till the break in period is over.
Also, I would not tow for at least 1000 miles.

I would think with a manual transmission you would feel the snappy-ness even more than with an Automatic.

Yes is a little more snapier but not what I was expecting, as far from mpg I actually lose about 2 mpg, do I have to wait (break-in) for me to see the difference of power and the computer re learn the new gears?

It would be instant. You don't have to wait for the computer to "learn" the gears. You just have to wait until they're broken (usually somewhere around 500 miles) before you can really put your foot into it

im all abouth low end torque, mpg and down low power.
this is driving me crazy as i spend $1900 for the full install for no result and only a small difference of the line?

as far mpg i lost 2mpg?, why is that?.
the 4.56 suppose help with power and mpg city?.

maybe the tires are to small (265/70-17) for the 4.56?
35'' are on the next list, but not now after spending almost 2k on gears.

Give it a little more time, wait the break in period out then push the peddle to the floor. Under light throttle, like you should be driving during break in, mine was barely noticeable over the 3.92s. After the break-in period when I was able to get on it more you could feel the difference

Your tires are too small.:roflsquared:

I would expect it to hurt your performance (having to shift so much) and your mileage (running higher RPMs).

Typically people put on the larger tires, complain about it boggin, THEN re-gear. Ya just did it backward. I don't think you'll ever 'love' the mod like most do because of this.

I have 33's-34's tires and I do a lot of shifting, like stated above, and high RPM's. I never considered that a larger tire would actually do better. Any one have proof of this?

What would be noticeable is when you have a few thousand miles on the 4.56's then you drive a same spec ram with the original 3.73. That is when you really feel the difference.

I drove a same trim Ram with 3.92 and it was very noticeable off the line and really made me feel how much i love lower gears.

4.56s with your relatively small tires and nv4500 manual tran may be a little too low to notice the mpgs in the city, and you will not have the gains the auto trans guys have.

When you hear everyone swearing by 4.56 gears, 99% of them have 545rfe auto trans, so they do not have nearly as low of a first gear, you have 5.61:1 vs 3.00:1. They also have a higher overdrive, 0.67:1 vs your 0.75:1.

first if u have the manual book on it it said to get out of 2nd gear as 1rs gear is only for towing or heavy pull, second is that 5 gear is only 0.73:1, third I know that with a nv4500 - 31" - 4.56 I know I'm way to over-geared that's is why what's to go 315/70-17 n like the low end grunt of 2nd gear, + mpg up is a bonus!,.from 0.67 to 0.73 is only 200rpm max off so u tell me if a go it wrong?
When u mean to low to notice city mpg?

I don't understand why you put 4.56 gears in if your only running 31" tires? Your not going to really get better mileage by changing to the 4.56's unless your running bigger tires then you will only gain back what mileage you lost.

The 3.73 and 3.92's are more then efficient up to a 35" tires, if your going to run 37's or larger then you definitely want 4.56 or 4.88 gears. Basically as you increase your tire size you start losing gas mileage, if you put the 4.56 gears in once your up to 35 or 37" tires, if more of less tricks the computer thinking your back at your stock set up and you gain back the mileage you lost.

I have 37's with 4.56 gears and I can get 14-15 mpg highway, 13-14 around town, before I put the 4.56 gears in and running 3.92 gears I was down to 8 to 10 mpg

You have two routes you can go get bigger tires and get your MPG back a bit and feel better about your purchase, or get a cam that will wake up the motor up and then hope those little tires last for more than 6 mths.

I am a huge fan of 4.56 gears. I have automatic so can't speak for change in a manual. I will ask though what are you using for gear lube? Did you do the gear break in process that Randy's ring and pinion suggests. I know that mine made a huge difference. I get decent mpg if I keep my foot off the right pedal. I really notice how well my truck can tow now it is a beast. I did notice that using synthetic lube in the rear made a difference with rolling resistance feel. It was so silky smooth.

Not true. My tires are 31" tall as well and although highway stayed the same city bumped up a couple mpg. Less effort to get you moving = better mpg, doesnt matter how big or small your tires are, difference is how much quicker you get moving.

Back when I had 31" tires and 3.92 gears ... I was getting 19 mpg highway and 16 mpg city with the 5.7 Hemi, that went to hell when I started putting bigger tires on it and was down to 9 mpg until I went with 4.56 gears. Not getting anywhere close to what I was getting stock, now I'm at 15 highway and about 13 city.
